Defense lifts #5 Seawolves over Cavs in Portland, 60-47

PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior Safiyyah Yasin scored 13 points and 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage used another stifling defensive performance Saturday to close the regular season with a 60-47 women's basketball victory over Concordia-Portland at LCEF Court.

The Seawolves (29-2, 19-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got nine points from freshman guard Rachel Ingram and eight points and seven rebounds from junior forward Sala Langi to run their winning streak to 11 as they enter next week's GNAC Tournament.

Playing the final game in their program's history, the Cavaliers (6-22, 5-15) were led by 16 points and five rebounds from Tamika Etherly, plus a game-high 11 rebounds from Kelsey Hudson. The university announced earlier this month that it would cease operations at the conclusion of this school year.

"That was far from our prettiest offensive performance this year, but our defense was solid again today, and we're pleased to get a road win in a tough environment," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team outshot the hosts .390 to .340 and won the rebounding battle 40-31. "We know we are going to have to step up our level with the postseason here now, and we're excited for the challenge. Beyond the game of basketball though, my heart goes out to Concordia athletics and their women's team. Coach (Sean) Kelly is a good friend of mine, and I wish him and his players only the best."

Entering at No. 2 in the NCAA West Regional rankings and still with a chance to host the regional tournament, UAA led from start to finish Saturday. Despite holding just a 14-13 edge after the opening quarter, the Seawolves used a 9-0 run – capped by a Nicole Pinckney three-pointer – to surge ahead 28-17 with five minutes left in the opening half.

The Cavaliers stayed within striking distance when Riley Friauf trimmed her team's deficit to 39-32 midway through the third quarter, but they would go the next six minutes without a field goal as the Seawolves pushed the lead to 47-33.

UAA led by at least 13 points throughout the final quarter, claiming its largest lead at 58-41 with three minutes left.

Yasin shot 5 of 12 from the field and grabbed six rebounds, while Langi shot 3 of 8 and snagged four steals without committing a turnover. Ingram connected on 3 of 8 three-pointers to push her UAA freshman record to 58 thus far, and junior point guard Stephanie Jackson added seven points on 3-of-5 shooting and two assists off the bench. Junior center Tennae Voliva led the Seawolves with eight rebounds.

Now just one win shy of their fourth 30-win season in five years, the Seawolves will be the top seed at next week's GNAC Tournament in Seattle. UAA will face either Simon Fraser or Central Washington in Friday's semifinal round, with tip time to be announced later tonight.

All games from the GNAC Tournament will be streamed live at gnac.tv.
