Seniors push UAA past NNU in GNAC quarterfinals, 85-76

SEATTLE – Tyler Brimhall scored 17 points and fellow senior Tyrus Hosley had 15 points to lead 5th-seeded Alaska Anchorage to an 85-76 comeback victory over 4th-seeded Northwest Nazarene in the quarterfinals of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championships at Royal Brougham Pavilion on Thursday.

The Seawolves (19-13) also got 12 points apiece from senior forward Niko Bevens and junior center Oggie Pantovic as they advanced to the GNAC semifinals to face top-seeded and 25th-ranked Seattle Pacific on Friday at 1:15 p.m. AST.

The Nighthawks (15-11) were paced by 17 points from guard George Reidy, but the Idaho club could not protect an early 12-point lead and were outscored 20-7 over the final 5:35.

"We were very resilient," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team shot 8 of 25 from long range but connected on 21 of 31 two-point attempts. "Oggie didn't have a big game because of foul trouble, we turned it over too much, we didn't shoot well (on threes), and we didn't rebound well, but we were resilient and kept it close while we fought through those troubles, and we got some huge stops and rebounds there at the end."

Back in the GNAC tournament for the ninth time in 10 years following a one-year absence, the Seawolves fell behind early, watching the Nighthawks take control with a 14-0 run to make it 18-6 at the 14-minute mark.

The Seawolves started chipping away behind 10 first-half points from Bevens, however, and retook the lead, 34-33, on two free throws by Hosley with 2:07 on the clock.

NNU took a 39-37 lead into halftime and built it 60-51 with 12 minutes remaining on a three-point by guard Jaylen Fox.

UAA trailed 65-60 when senior guard Jack Macdonald picked up a steal and delivered a three-pointer on the other end, and Brimhall pulled the game even at 69-69 when he took a 50-foot pass from Hosley and finished a fastbreak layup with four minutes left.

After an NNU free throw, Hosley swished back-to-back jumpers to give UAA the lead for good, and sophomore guard Tobin Karlberg – who had missed his first five three-pointers – delivered a three-pointer with 1:36 left to make it 77-70.

The Seawolves held the Nighthawks without a field goal for nearly five minutes until Olamilekan Adetunji's putback layup with 42 seconds left, and UAA made its last eight free throws to clinch it from the stripe.

All seven players in UAA's primary rotation scored at least nine points, with Brimhall shooting 7 of 10 from the field and Hosley knocking down 5 of 9, along with five rebounds and two assists. Brimhall also had four rebounds, two assists and a pair of big blocked shots.

A First Team All-GNAC selection, Pantovic shot 3 of 4 from the field and 6 of 6 on free throws to score double figures for the 20th straight game, while Bevens – an honorable mention All-GNAC performer – stretched his streak to 39 games in a row with at least one three-pointer.

Macdonald had 11 points, three assists and tied his career high with five rebounds, while DeAndre Osuigwe and Karlberg tallied nine points apiece.
