BURNABY, British Columbia –
Eve Stephens tallied 17 kills and
Ellen Floyd had 44 assists and four aces Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its fifth straight victory, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-12 over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (12-5, 5-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 14 kills on .500 hitting from
Lisa Jaunet and 13 kills, six digs and three aces from fellow outside hitter
Mahala Kaapuni as they moved into sole possession of first place in the league standings.
SFU (8-4, 2-3) was led by 11 kills and nine digs from freshman Brooke Dexter, but the hosts were outhit .308 to .177 and outblocked 6-3.
"That was a great win on the road against a very good team," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose squad held SFU to .117 hitting in the second-through-fourth sets. "We executed a game plan well. Our serve helped in the last three sets to keep their strong offense from continuing to roll."
After allowing .367 hitting in the opening frame and trailing through most of the second, the Seawolves turned things around following a timeout down 19-17. Stephens gave UAA a 22-21 lead with two straight kills before a service error retied it, and the Seawolves won the last three points, getting kills from
Vera Pluharova and Stephens to close it.
UAA used another late comeback in the third, erasing a 18-15 deficit with a 6-1 run. A kill by Jaunet and an ace by Floyd – the 150th of her career – made it 24-20, but the Canadians would fight off three straight set points, prompting a timeout by Green. A perfect pass on the ensuing serve led Floyd into an easy assist to Stephens, who converted down the middle of the court for the clincher.
The Seawolves closed with a dominant fourth set, jumping to leads of 8-1 and 15-5, and hitting .375.
Jaunet's .500 attack percentage tied her career high from one week ago against Seattle Pacific as the sophomore transfer raised her number to .328 in GNAC contests.
Kaapuni hit .346 and Pluharova had seven kills on 10 swings to post the second-best percentage of her career at .700.
Pluharova also had four total blocks to move into sole possession of sixth place on UAA's career list (.387), while junior libero
Talia Leauanae paced the back row with 12 digs, along with four assists.
Saturday's win sets up a showdown between UAA and second-place No. 25 Central Washington (8-3, 4-1) on Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets. All attendees are required to wear masks.
