Box Score SEATTLE –
Eve Stephens had a match-high 14 kills but it wasn't enough to save the 24th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team Thursday as several long streaks came to an end with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 loss to Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion.
The Seawolves (15-6, 8-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 33 assists from junior setter
Ellen Floyd as they lost a league contest for the first time since Nov. 2, 2019, snapping a 14-match winning streak in GNAC matches.
The Falcons (10-7, 6-4) were led by 10 kills on .600 hitting and five block assists from Alison Wilks, plus 31 assists, three kills, six digs and six blocks from setter Lindsey Lambert, halting a 10-match skid with their program's first home victory over UAA since Oct. 29, 2011.
"A lot of credit goes to SPU tonight, but this is certainly a disappointing way to start the second round of conference play," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team also suffered its first sweep in a GNAC outing since Nov. 2, 2019 – a string of 29 straight matches. "I'm disappointed that we weren't ready to compete at the start of the match, but we'll have to have short memories and refocus for a dangerous Billings team on Saturday."
After UAA handled SPU in three sets Sept. 25 in Anchorage, the script was flipped Thursday.
The Falcons jumped to a 10-3 lead in the opening set and never trailed despite a pair of late Seawolf comeback efforts, outhitting the visitors .258 to .088 at the outset.
UAA led 5-1 early in the second set but could not keep its momentum, succumbing to a 19-9 SPU surge midway through the frame.
The third set was more competitive, featuring seven ties and three leads changes, however SPU would take control in the late-going and close with a 9-5 run.
The Seawolves were hurt by nine attack errors in each of the first two sets as they hit just .152 – nearly 90 points below their average – for the match.
Stephens added nine digs, sophomore outside hitter
Lisa Jaunet had 11 kills, and senior middle blocker
Vera Pluharova tied her own UAA season high with nine total blocks.
UAA stays on the road to face Montana State Billings at 11 a.m. ADT on Saturday at Alterowitz Gymnasium. Surf to the volleyball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
