ANCHORAGE – Freshman
Nicole Blue came off the bench to deliver 10 kills but it wasn't enough for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team Thursday in a 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-11 loss to Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (16-7, 9-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 kills and 10 digs from junior
Eve Stephens as they saw their five-match home winning streak come to an end.
Simon Fraser (15-4, 9-3) was led by 16 kills and six blocks from middle blocker Kalyn Hartmann and 24 digs from libero Bianca Te, helping the visitors outhit UAA .206 to .067 and win the digs battle, 71-56. Camryn Vosloh and Brooke Dexter added 10 kills apiece as SFU won its seventh in a row and for just the second time in 11 trips to Anchorage.
After beating SFU in four sets in British Columbia on Oct. 2, UAA got off to a hot start again Thursday, leading through most of the opening frame. The Canadians made late runs to tie it 22-22 and 23-23, but the Seawolves took the early advantage on back-to-back kills from
Lisa Jaunet and Stephens.
SFU dominated the second set to even the match, and UAA would forge a 17-14 lead in the third when Blue smashed a kill. All of the Seawolves' momentum fizzled from that point, however, as the visitors answered with a 7-0 run and pulled away to score 11 of the frame's final 13 points.
Things got no better for UAA in the fourth as SFU outhit the hosts .292 to -.121 to close the match.
Setter
Ellen Floyd dished 30 assists in the loss, while senior middle blocker
Vera Pluharova tallied a match-high eight total blocks.
With the setback, UAA falls out of first place in the GNAC for the first time this season, dropping one match behind 19th-ranked Western Washington, which pulled out a five-set win at Alaska Fairbanks. The Vikings (14-4, 10-1) travel next to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets. All attendees are required to wear masks.
