Efficient Seawolves sweep Nighthawks

ANCHORAGE – Eve Stephens had 15 kills and fellow junior Ellen Floyd powered an efficient offense with 40 assists Saturday to propel the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-17 sweep of Northwest Nazarene at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (14-5, 7-0 GNAC) also got 10 kills from Mahala Kaapuni, nine kills from Lisa Jaunet and seven kills on .700 hitting from Vera Pluharova as they outhit the visitors .400 to .190. UAA's hitting percentage was the highest in a GNAC match this season and the program's best in a league match since 2015.

The Nighthawks (2-12, 0-7) were led by 10 kills on .600 hitting from middle blocker Tayler Markland, but were outblocked 9-0.

"Our serve-receive and passing continue to improve, and that was what led to such high hitting numbers for us," said Green, whose team hit .500 in the third set. "Our block also came through big, especially at some key points late in each set. And Eve was just tremendous again, really showing why she is one of the top players in the nation."

Coming off a career-high-tying 26 kills in Thursday's 3-2 win over No. 25 Central Washington, Stephens committed just one attack error in 31 swings, hitting .452 and adding three blocks and 10 digs. It was the seventh double-double of the season for the 2019 AVCA Second Team All-American from Palmer.

Despite leading for most of the opening set, the Seawolves found themselves down 21-20 when Kaapuni hit an attack wide. Stephens answered with a kill, however, and teamed with Pluharova on a block to take the lead. Two subsequent NNU timeouts could not stop UAA's momentum, as Kaapuni and Stephens registered back-to-back kills, and Kaapuni and Pluharova blocked Anna Gable's attack on set point.

The Seawolves overcame an early 6-3 deficit in the second frame, taking a 19-15 lead when Pluharova made a solo block on Gable. The Nighthawks crawled back within 22-21, but Stephens responded with another kill and served an ace moments later on set point.

UAA trailed 9-6 in the third before surging ahead with a 12-3 run, and NNU would not get closer than four points the rest of the way.

Pluharova and fellow middle blocker Akor Maywin each had four total blocks, while junior libero Talia Leauanae had a flawless match with nine digs, two aces, six assists, 18-of-18 serve-receive, and no errors in any category.

The Seawolves stay home next week to host rival Alaska Fairbanks (13-7, 6-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets and parking information. Masks are required for all attendees.
