ANCHORAGE – Junior setter
Ellen Floyd dished 32 assists in a nearly flawless performance Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-8, 25-23, 25-23 sweep of Western Oregon at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The regionally 8th-ranked Seawolves (18-11, 11-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got eight kills apiece from
Akor Maywin,
Lisa Jaunet and
Eve Stephens as they posted late comebacks in the second and third sets, staying alive for a possible berth in the upcoming NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships.
The Wolves (4-20, 2-15) got a match-high 10 kills from outside hitter Isabel Hurliman, but the visitors were outhit .271 to .067 and surrendered 11 aces.
"That was a bit of a roller coaster in the second and third, but we managed to get the job done against a team that is much better than its record indicates," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team plays one more match before the NCAA Tournament field is unveiled Monday (3:30 p.m. AST). "Our offense was very crisp when we made good passes to Ellen, and Akor really came through with a strong performance both offensively and defensively."
After outhitting the Wolves .417 to -.034 in an opening-set rout, the Seawolves had to battle from behind late in the second and third frames to earn their 17th straight win in the head-to-head series.
UAA actually led most of the second set, jumping ahead 9-4 and 14-10 before the visitors from Monmouth tightened the score and earned a 22-21 advantage on a kill from Bella Maclellan. Tied 23-23 moments later, Floyd delivered back-to-back assists to Maywin and
Nicole Blue for the go-ahead and clinching points.
The Wolves dug out of an early 7-3 hole in the third and controlled action until a late Seawolf run knotted it 22-22. WOU pulled ahead on Hurliman's final kill, but UAA responded with consecutive kills from Jaunet and Stephens, and Wolves outside hitter Bailee Hartsook sailed an attack out of bounds on match point.
Floyd added four kills, four aces and eight digs as the Pensacola, Fla., native committed only one error in any category and moved into sole possession of UAA's career aces record, now with 166.
Stephens also climbed the Seawolves' career statistics lists in the victory, moving up to No. 2 all-time with 1,398 kills.
Maywin had only one attack error in 12 attempts for a match-best .583 hitting percentage, while Blue had five kills on 10 swings to tie her career-best .500 hitting percentage.
Maywin added five block assists, and junior libero
Talia Leauanae made a match-high 17 digs for the Seawolves, who host Saint Martin's on Saturday at 7 p.m. in their regular-season finale. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets. All attendees must be masked.
