ANCHORAGE –
Jahnna Hajdukovich scored a career-high 28 points and fellow junior guard
Nicole Pinckney added 11 points and four assists Saturday to propel the nationally ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 73-53 victory over Texas Permian Basin in the Seawolf Hoops Classic at the Alaska Airlines Center.
A local product from Dimond High School, Hajdukovich came one three-pointer short of the program record, making 8 of 16 from long range, along with career-highs of nine rebounds and four assists for the Seawolves (3-0).
The Falcons (1-3) were led by nine points and eight rebounds from center Alexis Wykoff as the visitors from Odessa, Texas, were outshot 44 percent to 37 percent and outrebounded 32-27.
"I was not pleased with our effort in the first half, but we responded well after halftime and executed our offense much more efficiently, and Jahnna just stayed on fire the whole day," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Div. II top-25 media poll and No. 12 in the coaches' poll. "We still have a lot to work on, but it's good to be 3-0 as we keep trying to improve."
Despite trailing for only 17 seconds in the early going, the Seawolves had trouble pulling away from the Lone Star Conference club, holding just a 31-27 lead with one minute left in the first half. Hajdukovich drained a three-pointer from the corner to end the period, though, and seniors
Sala Langi,
Stephanie Jackson and
Lauren Johnson scored consecutive baskets after halftime to make it a 40-29 advantage.
The Seawolves kept their lead in double figures for the remainder of the contest as they stretched their school-record home winning streak to 30 games.
Freshman guard
Jazzpher Evans scored all nine of her points in the first half, and Langi finished with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting, two assists and two steals.
The Seawolves play another out-of-region opponent next week when they host Winston Salem State at the Alaska Airlines Center, Nov. 26-27.
