ANCHORAGE – Forward
Lauren Johnson and point guard
Nicole Pinckney scored 14 points apiece Saturday and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to stay unbeaten with a 62-53 win over Winston-Salem State at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (5-0) – ranked No. 1 in the Div. II national media poll and No. 9 by the coaches – also got 11 points and eight rebounds from senior center
Tennae Voliva as they pulled away in the third quarter.
The Rams (3-3) were led by 13 points from forward Melody Prichard and 10 rebounds from forward Laichelle Sparrow, but the visitors from North Carolina were hurt by 24 turnovers.
Despite setting a program record by holding Rams to two points in the opening quarter, the Seawolves could not find their offensive rhythm throughout the first half and led just 22-18 at the break.
Leading 24-20 early in the third quarter, Johnson and Pinckney combined for 12 straight points, and another Pinckney jumper with 2:14 on the clock made it 39-22.
UAA pushed its lead as high as 62-41 on a Voliva layup at the 3:24 mark of the fourth quarter, before Winston-Salem ended the game on an 11-0 run.
Johnson shot 4 of 6 from the field, 2 of 2 from three-point range and 4 of 4 at the free throw line as the senior came two points shy of matching her career scoring high.
Pinckney shot 6 of 11 and dished four assists with just one turnover in a team-high 25 minutes.
Sophomore guard
Ra'Anaa Bey led UAA and matched her career high with three steals.
The Seawolves – who stretched their school-record home winning streak to 32 games – begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week with road games at Saint Martin's (Thur., Dec. 2, 4:15 p.m. AST) and Western Oregon (Sat., Dec. 4, 1 p.m. AST).
