'Wolves whomp Wildcats in season opener, 100-43

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore guard Rachel Ingram led a balanced attack with 14 points and junior forward Kimani Fernandez grabbed 10 rebounds Friday to power the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 100-43 blowout of Johnson & Wales in its season opener at the Wildcat Center.

The Seawolves – ranked No. 12 by the coaches and No. 5 by sports information directors in the NCAA Div. II preseason polls – also got 13 points and five rebounds from newcomer Jazzpher Evans as they posted the third-largest road margin in program history.

The Wildcats – for whom the game counted as an exhibition – were led by nine points from guard Tanaeschia Dorsey.

"We committed way too many unforced turnovers ourselves, but otherwise I thought we played well on both sides of the court and enforced our will from the beginning," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. "We made of a lot of smart extra passes that led to easy buckets, and we obviously had great balance in the scoring column."

Playing their first meaningful game since Mar. 7, 2020, the Seawolves forced turnovers on the Wildcats' first six possessions and never trailed. UAA led 24-8 after one quarter as JWU committed 15 of its 35 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.

The Seawolves outshot the hosts .559 (38 of 68) to .245 (13 of 53) and won the rebounding battle 38-30.

Ingram nailed 4 of 12 shots from long range, while Evans – a freshman transfer from Div. II Quincy – shot 4 of 6 from the field, knocking down both of her three-point tries. Guard Ra'Anaa Bey had 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting, and veterans Lauren Johnson and Tennae Voliva accounted for 10 points each.

Junior point guard Nicole Pinckney scored all eight of her points in the first half and led the way with a game-high five assists as all 12 Seawolves scored at least three points.

The victory extended the Seawolves' overall winning streak to 17 games, dating back to Jan. 25, 2020, tying the fifth-longest streak in program history. It is also was their 10th straight road victory, tying the third-longest mark.

UAA gets almost two weeks off before returning to action Nov. 19 with their home opener against Hillsdale at the Alaska Airlines Center. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets.
