Balanced offense leads to sweep of Wolves

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Junior right-side hitter Eve Stephens delivered 12 kills Saturday to lead a balanced Alaska Anchorage offense in a 25-13, 31-29, 25-16 volleyball sweep of Western Oregon at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (5-1) also got 24 assists, five kills, seven digs and four aces from junior setter Ellen Floyd as UAA had six players with at least four kills.

The Wolves (0-2) were led by nine kills from outside hitter Lauren Smith but were out-hit .228 to .095.

"After surrendering a lead, we showed a lot of poise fighting off several set points in the second set," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team extended its winning streak to 15 in a row over Western Oregon. "I was pleased with our service game, too, and it was great to see the way we spread the ball around to all of our hitters."

After out-hitting the Wolves .286 to -.105 in the opening set, the Seawolves appeared to be pulling away with an easy win in the second frame, grabbing a 21-14 lead on a kill by Mahala Kaapuni and going ahead 24-20 on a Floyd ace. Western Oregon responded with four kills on the next five rallies to earn a 25-24 advantage, however. Following a Wolves service error, Western Oregon earned four more set points, but Stephens and Nicole Blue combined for kills each time to forge a 29-29 tie. Floyd earned a kill when Wolves blocker Delaney Smith was called in the net, and junior middle blocker Akor Maywin blasted a kill to finish the set.

After fighting injuries throughout her career, Maywin saw her most extensive playing time and finished with six kills on .286 hitting and one block assist. Blue added eight kills and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Pembroke had five kills, seven digs and two aces.

Stephens committed just one attack error for a match-best .333 hitting percentage, along with a pair of block assists.

Freshman defensive specialist Reilly Plumhoff tied for team-high honors with seven digs, to go with three assists, one ace and no service errors.

The Seawolves are back in action with a 9 a.m./1 p.m. ADT doubleheader Sunday against Central Washington (1-2) at Nicholson Pavilion. Live video and stats links are available at GoSeawolves.com.
