FAIRBANKS (Apr. 17) – Junior setter
Ellen Floyd dished 33 assists and served a school-record seven aces Saturday to power the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-13 sweep of Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.
The Seawolves (9-1) got a match-high 10 kills from junior right-side hitter
Eve Stephens as they connected for a season-best .386 attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Pembroke had nine kills on .444 hitting, freshman outside hitter
Nicole Blue had eight kills on career-best .500 hitting, and senior middle blocker
Vera Pluharova tallied seven kills on .429 hitting as all three players committed just one attack error apiece.
The Nanooks (5-6) were led by seven kills from senior Markie Miller as their spring season concluded.
"Offensively we did a great job, led by Ellen's setting choices and set locations, and our passing and serving was much better than yesterday," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team earned a 3-1 win over UAF on Friday night. "Hannah was outstanding again, especially the job she did all weekend as our primary passer, and it was nice to see Nicole bounce back with a good hitting performance after a couple tough outings for her."
The Seawolves earned the early advantage with a comeback victory in the opening set, overcoming deficits of 14-9 and 17-15. Tied 19-19, Blue delivered a kill and Stephens and freshman
Mahala Kaapuni combined to block UAF outside hitter AveRee Reynolds. Following a Nanook timeout, Floyd served her first two aces to cap a 4-0 surge, and Stephens and Kaapuni finished the frame with back-to-back kills.
UAA erased an early 9-7 disadvantage in the second set, getting a block and two kills from Pluharova during an 8-1 run to take control. UAF pulled back within 21-18 on an ace by Zoey Keene, but Blue answered with a kill and Floyd served another ace.
The Seawolves trailed 3-1 to start the third before taking over, hitting .520 in the set, led by four kills apiece from Pembroke and Stephens.
Floyd's seven aces tied the record for most by a Seawolf since the NCAA went to 25-point rally scoring in 2008, equaling former teammate
Anjoilyn Vreeland's mark set against UAF on Oct. 22, 2019. Vreeland's effort came in five sets, however.
With her first assist Saturday, Floyd also passed Calli Scott (2,401 assists, 2008-09) for sixth place on UAA's career list, while she moved from 19th all the way to 12th place in total aces, finishing the day with 107.
Junior libero
Talia Leauanae picked up a match-high 13 digs, while freshman defensive specialist
Reilly Plumhoff served a pair of aces with no service errors.
The Seawolves will finish their pandemic-abbreviated 2020-21 spring season with five matches on the Big Island next weekend, starting with a Friday (4:30 p.m. ADT) contest against host Hawaii Hilo.
