HILO, Hawaii –
Eve Stephens had 14 kills and 13 digs to surpass a major career milestone Sunday, however the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team could never find its rhythm as Hawaii Pacific pulled a 25-16, 25-21, 28-26 upset of the Seawolves at Vulcan Gym.
The Seawolves (11-4) also got nine kills and six digs from sophomore
Hannah Pembroke in their 2021 spring season finale.
The Sharks (3-11) were led by 11 kills and four block assists from Demi Winters as they played their first competition from outside the 50th State this year.
"That was a disappointing performance to finish," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose program suffered its first back-to-back losses since November 2017. "Despite this result, though, we're grateful for the opportunity to play this spring and we will be stronger for it going into the fall."
UAA's lone bright spot in Sunday's loss was Stephens, who registered her sixth double-double of the season and became the 10th player in program history to surpass 1,000 kills, finishing the day at 1,005. A junior right-side hitter, the All-American from Palmer (Colony HS) still has two full seasons remaining, with the NCAA's decision to not count this pandemic season against student-athletes' eligibility.
The Seawolves were almost able to force a fourth set when Stephens fought off a match point with her final kill, but the Sharks responded with three straight points to take the sweep.
Hilo native
Mahala Kaapuni finished with six kills on .357 hitting and Maui product
Talia Leauanae had a team-high 16 digs. Junior setter
Ellen Floyd – who surpassed the 2,500 career assists mark on Saturday – had 32 assists and seven digs.
NCAA Volleyball play is scheduled to return to its regular format as a fall sport beginning in August, with the national tournament also set to resume.
