Seawolves bear down for late knockout of Boxers

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Senior forwards Sala Langi and Tennae Voliva combined for 25 points and 10 rebounds Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 62-57 comeback victory over host Pacific University at the Stoller Center.

Langi had 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting, five rebounds and two steals as the NCAA Div. II Seawolves (3-0) overcame a 40-30 rebounding disadvantage and a tough night at the free-throw stripe.

The NCAA Div. III Boxers (2-2) – for whom the game counted as an exhibition – were led by a brilliant offensive showing from guard Camy Aguinaldo, who kept her team close with 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, two assists, two steals and just one turnover in 34 minutes.

"We started out flat offensively and without aggression, and that kind of set the tone for the game for us," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team is playing an abbreviated five-game season this spring. "Aguinaldo played at a different level than us, so credit to her and her coaches for putting her in positions to expose our deficiencies. We feel we can learn from this game and are fortunate to come away with a win."

The Seawolves trailed 28-26 at halftime and stared at a 36-30 deficit with 5:30 left in the third quarter when senior point guard Stephanie Jackson swished a three-pointer on a nice feed from Rachel Ingram. Freshman point guard Malie Marfil – who had not taken a shot to that point in the game – then followed with a personal 7-1 spurt, shooting 3-of-3 in a 62-second span.

UAA clung to a 43-41 lead after the third quarter and saw the game tied 52-52 when Pacific's Daesha Viela stole an inbounds pass after a Boxer basket and scored an easy layup with 5:47 remaining.

Langi took a defensive rebound the length of the floor for a layup to regain the lead with 5:06 to go, and Jackson scored off a Kimani Fernandez steal to stretch it to a two-possession game. After a Boxer three-pointer, Langi took a soft interior pass from Ra'Anaa Bey and finished for a 58-55 lead, and Voliva scored inside to pad the advantage with 2:29 left.

Aguinaldo scored to make it 60-57 at the 2-minute mark, but the Boxers would miss their last five field-goal attempts, and Voliva – who had missed her first five free throws – calmly sank the game's final points from the stripe with 36 seconds left.

Voliva finished with 12 points (6-10 FG), five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals, while Jackson overcame foul trouble to tally nine points (4-8 FG), four assists and four steals. Ingram had seven points and two assists, and senior forward Amelia Motz did all of her damage in the second half with six points (3-3 FG) and three rebounds.

Senior forward Lauren Johnson led UAA with six rebounds.

The Seawolves complete their spring campaign with a pair of road games at NAIA program Southern Oregon on Apr. 16-17 in Ashland, Ore.
