HONOLULU – Senior middle blocker
Vera Pluharova delivered a historic offensive effort and junior setter
Ellen Floyd dished 38 assists Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team rolled to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-13 victory over Hawaii Pacific at the Shark Tank.
The Seawolves (2-0) got a career-high-tying 11 kills on 12 swings from Pluharova, whose .917 attack percentage broke the 20-year-old school record previously held by Janelle Veith (.909 vs. Seattle, Oct. 20, 2001). UAA also used 10 kills on .412 hitting from sophomore outside hitter
Lisa Jaunet and a match-high 13 kills from junior right-side hitter
Eve Stephens to post a dominant .361 to -.045 advantage in team attack percentage.
The Sharks (0-3) were led by four kills from Micaela Ladjevic and outblocked the Seawolves 7-4, but the hosts managed just 21 total digs.
"That was a better job offensively today," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team premiered by eking out a 25-21, 27-25, 26-24 win, despite hitting just .122, against the same HPU team on Friday. "Ellen and Vera connected very well today thanks in part to some good serve-receive play by our primary passers. We are going to get some short rest and will have to play every bit as well tonight against a good Chaminade team."
UAA needed comebacks to win each set Friday against HPU, but the plot was turned upside down in the rematch. After an even first 18 points in the opening frame, Stephens delivered two kills in a four-point span to snag a 13-9 lead for the visitors, who would never trail again. The Seawolves jumped to early 5-1 edges in the second and third sets, and never let the Sharks closer than two points at any stage.
Freshman outside hitter
Mahala Kaapuni had two aces in the first set and smashed five of her six kills in the second set, while freshman defensive specialist
Reilly Plumhoff made a match-high nine digs, and junior libero
Talia Leauanae had seven digs and two aces.
The Seawolves go crosstown to finish their Hawaii trip with two matches against Chaminade at McCabe Gymnasium, tonight at 8 p.m. ADT and Sunday at noon ADT. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
