Career-high days help UAA avenge loss to 'Swords

HONOLULU – Eve Stephens and Nicole Blue combined for 29 kills and junior setter Ellen Floyd had a huge all-around effort to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team edge Chaminade 27-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-23 at McCabe Gymnasium on Sunday.

The Seawolves (3-1) got 15 kills and a career-high 18 digs from Stephens – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year – as they avenged Saturday night's loss to the Silverswords (2-1) in the opening-weekend finale. Floyd finished with 36 assists, 17 digs and tied her career high with seven kills, including the match-point clincher.

Chaminade was led by 14 kills and 11 digs from outside hitter Brooklen Pe'a and 31 digs from libero Anna Dalla Vecchia, but the hosts were hurt by 16 service errors and lost despite winning the statistical battle in attack percentage (.265 to .207), blocks (9-5) and digs (73-31).

"Chaminade is an excellent team and should be a playoff contender out of their league, so it was important to earn the split with them," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "We played gritty and won the serve/pass battle, and the long rallies that we won were pivotal. That was a good comeback after last night."

The Seawolves made the win possible with a late comeback in the opening frame, fighting off four Silversword set points. Floyd capped a 3-0 rally with a kill to make it 24-24, and it was tied 25-25 after a Chaminade service error. Blue followed with one of her two aces, and junior outside hitter Lisa Jaunet converted a pass from Floyd to earn the early advantage.

After being outhit .265 to .088 in the second set, UAA bounced back to survive another close frame in the third. UAA took an early 12-5 lead but saw the hosts chip away, eventually tying it 22-22. Chaminade took a 24-23 edge when Blue hit into a block by Lataisia Saulala and Marcelle Butler to earn another set point, before senior middle blocker Vera Pluharova recorded one of her seven kills to tie it again. Butler hit the ball long on the ensuing point, and Blue smashed her seventh kill of the set off a heady pass from Stephens to end it.

The Seawolves never trailed in the fourth, jumping to leads of 16-9 and 22-16 before hanging on by a thread. Chaminade used a 6-0 run to forge ties at 22-22 and 23-23, but another service error ended its momentum, and Floyd found an opening off another Stephens pass to earn the victory.

Stephens recorded her second double-double in a row and the 20th of her career, while Blue – a second-year freshman outside hitter – came one shy of her personal best with 14 kills, along with six digs. Floyd's seven kills tied her career-best from a 2018 win over Concordia-Portland, and junior libero Talia Leauanae got into the career-high column as well with four aces. Leauanae added 14 digs, and freshman defensive specialist Reilly Plumhoff tallied 10 digs and a career-high six assists.

The Seawolves return home to make their Alaska Airlines Center debut Thursday against Biola (7 p.m.) in the Seawolf Invitational. Next week's matches should mark UAA's first in front of fans since Dec. 6, 2019, and their first in front of the home crowd since Nov. 23, 2019.
