Seawolves sweep away Dust Devils

ANCHORAGE – Junior setter Ellen Floyd powered a balanced offensive attack with 27 assists, five kills and five aces Friday, leading the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-23, 25-17 sweep of Texas A&M International in the Seawolf Invitational at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (5-1) were led by nine kills apiece from freshman outside hitter Mahala Kaapuni and senior middle blocker Vera Pluharova as they outhit the visitors .208 to .103.

The Dust Devils (0-1) also got nine kills apiece from outside hitters Yaretzi Ortiz and Ilina Spasova, but the Lone Star Conference club could not make good on late comeback efforts in each set.

"Our serving was the key to our success today," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team had nine aces and just one service error. "We are lucky that was the case because we had some offensive struggles."

The Seawolves led from start to finish in the first set, but the second frame would turn into a seesaw affair. After jumping to a 6-1 lead, the Dust Devils saw the hosts roar back with a 13-1 run, only to answer with a 6-0 spurt of their own. Deadlocked at 20-20, UAA finally took control when the Dust Devils hit into a block by Eve Stephens and Akor Maywin to start a 3-0 run. Stephens staked UAA to a 24-21 edge with one of her eight kills and, following a pair of TAMUI points, Kaapuni rescued the Seawolves with an authoritative kill on the third set point.

UAA jumped to a 9-0 lead in the third set as Floyd served three aces in the opening sequence, and the Seawolves led by at least two points the rest of the way. The Seawolves recorded four of their nine blocks in the final frame, with Stephens picking up three of her seven blocks assists.

Maywin – a Texas native – recorded four kills on .375 hitting and a career-high six block assists, and junior libero Talia Leauanae finished with seven digs, five assists, three aces, no service errors and was 9-of-9 on serve receptions.

Floyd's five aces were the most for a Seawolf on the young season and tied her with Seawolf Hall of Famer Tracy Zink (1987-90) for No. 5 on the program's career list with 126 aces.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. to face Indianapolis.
