ANCHORAGE – Cariann Kunkel scored 24 points and Kortney Nelson had 15 points and nine rebounds Monday as Montana State Billings snapped 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage's 33-game home winning streak with a 72-48 victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (10-2, 3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) were led by 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from senior center
Tennae Voliva, but the hosts were hurt by 22 turnovers and outshot .436 to .321 from the field.
The Yellowjackets (10-8, 4-2) also got 10 points apiece from guards Shayla Montague and Skylar Patton as they handed the Seawolves their worst loss at the Alaska Airlines Center, which opened in the fall of 2014. It was the Seawolves' most lopsided home defeat since a 76-49 setback to Northwest Nazarene, Jan. 17, 2013 at the UAA Sports Complex.
"I want to congratulate MSU Billings on a great win," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team committed a season-high 22 turnovers. "They executed their game plan to perfection and took advantage of our mistakes. We did not execute well in any phase of the game, especially taking care of ball. This is only the beginning of a very tough schedule the rest of the way, so we will get refocused and try to put tonight behind us."
Coming off a 76-50 victory over Alaska Fairbanks two nights earlier, the Seawolves looked sharp in the opening six minutes, building a 15-6 lead on a three-point play by senior forward
Sala Langi. But things eroded for the hosts at that point, and the Yellowjackets responded with a game-changing 16-0 run over the next eight minutes, including a tying three-pointer by Montague at the first-quarter buzzer.
Billings stretched its halftime lead to 30-22 and scored the first seven points of the third quarter, never letting UAA within single digits in the second half.
Langi finished with seven points and senior forward
Lauren Johnson had six points, but no other Seawolf managed more than one field goal.
The loss marked UAA's first regular-season GNAC home setback in 41 games, dating to a 67-66 loss to Simon Fraser on Feb. 27, 2016.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center for the third game in a four-game homestand when they face nationally ranked Western Washington (10-1, 2-1 GNAC) on Thursday at 7 p.m. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets and links to live stats and video.
