SEATTLE – Sophomore guard
Rachel Ingram scored 13 points, including a pair of key free throws in overtime, helping the 19th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team snap a rare losing streak with a 60-58 victory over Seattle Pacific on Saturday at Brougham Pavilion.
The Seawolves (11-4, 4-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 points and seven rebounds from senior center
Tennae Voliva as they avoided the program's first four-game skid since January 2006.
The Falcons (8-9, 3-4 GNAC) were led by 13 points from Anna Eddy and eight rebounds and four assists from backcourt mate Abril Rexach Roure, but the hosts could never gain the advantage in regulation or overtime, and were unable to attempt a shot on their final possession.
"We showed a lot of toughness and resiliency on the defensive end of the court tonight, and that made the difference on a day when we needed to really gut out a win," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team scored its final 16 points from the free-throw line.
Playing the second of three games in a four-day stretch, the Seawolves jumped to a 29-16 lead when freshman guard
Malie Marfil converted a three-point play early in the second quarter. The Falcons cut their deficit to 34-25 on a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer, and stayed close at 46-40 after three quarters.
UAA stretched its lead to 51-42 on three straight
Lauren Johnson free throws early in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons would make another run, making it a one-possession game for the final 2:37 of regulation.
SPU tied it 55-55 on two free throws from Eddy with 26 seconds remaining, and the Falcons had a chance to win when Kaprice Boston stole the ball in the waning moments. Trailing the play, Johnson got back defensively just enough to distract Boston's layup attempt with less than a second on the clock.
In the extra session, Johnson staked UAA the lead with two free throws, and Ingram sank two more with 1:56 remaining for a 59-55 advantage. Eddy answered with the only field goal for either team in overtime, and Falcons center Shuyler Berry split a pair of free throws with 53 seconds remaining.
After trading defensive stops, UAA freshman
Jazzpher Evans got fouled and made one of two free throws with 17 seconds left, setting up the Falcons' final chance. With the clock winding under three seconds, Eddy's post-feed pass was deflected by
Jahnna Hajdukovich, and Langi grabbed the ball as the buzzer sounded.
Evans finished with seven points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Johnson had nine points, making 5 of 6 from the foul stripe.
Coming off her program-record seven second-half three-pointers in Thursday's loss at Montana State Billings, Ingram made her first two treys Saturday and finished 3 of 7 from long range. The Colorado Springs native also added three rebounds and two steals.
Voliva shot 2 of 3 from the field and 8 of 10 on charities, while grabbing two of UAA's 10 steals.
The Seawolves and Falcons will play another 1 p.m. tip Sunday at Brougham Pavilion in a game that was rescheduled from UAA's Dec. 30 home date. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
