Vikings edge Seawolves in 93-91 OT thriller in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Alaska Anchorage senior center Oggie Pantovic had 20 points – including a game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation – and nine rebounds, but the Seawolves could not overcome a late overtime deficit Monday in a 93-91 men's basketball loss to Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (8-5, 3-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 22 points from junior guard Tobin Karlberg and 18 points from senior guard David Rowlands as they outshot the hosts .536 (15 of 28) to .350 (7 of 20) from the three-point line.

The Vikings (11-6, 4-3) got a career-high 35 points from guard D'Angela Minnis, who made 13 of 24 shots from the floor and 6 of 7 at the foul stripe.

"This is one of the toughest road trips we've ever had to make in 20 years of GNAC play, and I was proud of the way our guys came out with energy and battle and fought all night," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team played Thursday at Montana State Billings and Saturday at Seattle Pacific. "Close losses like this are always a little hard to swallow, but I'm confident our guys will bounce back, and I know they are excited to finally be back on our home court at the Alaska Airlines Center next week, where they haven't played yet in 2022."

Playing the first of several rescheduled games due to six straight postponements, the Seawolves trailed 38-34 at halftime, before rallying with a big run midway through the second half. Trailing 57-52, Karlberg nailed a three-pointer and Rowlands fed Pantovic for a layup to tie it with 12:24 remaining. A.J. Garrity sank a three and Hunter Sweet scored two of his 15 points on a putback to make it a 69-59 lead at the 8:42 mark, but Vikings got a short jumper from Minnis to stem the tide.

After three-point play by Minnis tied it 73-73 at the 4-minute mark, Karlberg gave UAA the lead with one of his five three-pointers just 13 seconds later. The Seawolves led 78-74 with 90 seconds to play, but Vikings guard Daniel Hornbuckle scored five straight points, including a straightaway three-pointer with 36 seconds left, to retake the advantage.

Down 81-78 with 12 seconds remaining, the Seawolves called timeout to set up a game-tying shot, and Pantovic delivered on an open look from 25 feet to send the game to overtime.

UAA led 84-83 after Pantovic converted a three-point play, but the All-America candidate was called for his fifth foul at the 3:34 mark, and the Vikings surged ahead 89-84 on two Minnis free throws with 2:36 left.

Karlberg split a pair of free throws with 69 seconds left to draw within 93-91, but neither team would score again. Despite losing possession with 4.6 seconds left, UAA got a pair of final chances when Caleb Larsen drew and offensive foul on Minnis on the inbounds play, however Sweet could not convert an off-balance baseline jumper and a last-second try under the rim in the final moments.

Despite missing Thursday's game with illness and playing limited minutes off the bench Saturday, Pantovic responded with 6-of-11 shooting – 2 of 2 on three-pointers – and dished a team-high four assists.

Karlberg shot 8 of 14 overall and 5 of 9 on threes, along with five rebounds and three assists, and Rowlands was 7 of 14 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from long range, with three assists.

Garrity had seven points on perfect shooting (2-2 FG, 1-1 3FG, 2-2 FT) and three assists off the bench, and Larsen added five points.

The game featured 16 lead changes and 12 ties, and five players – Sweet, Karlberg, Minnis, Hornbuckle and WWU guard RJ Secrest – logged at least 41 minutes.

The Seawolves – who have not played at home since a Dec. 30 win over Seattle Pacific – return to the Alaska Airlines Center this week for games Thursday (5:15 p.m.) against Simon Fraser and Saturday (7:30 p.m.) against Western Washington.
