ANCHORAGE – Senior
Eve Stephens delivered 13 kills and three aces to pace a hot-hitting performance for the 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team Thursday in a 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 sweep of Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (20-1, 10-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 24 assists, five kills, 11 digs and a season-high five total blocks from senior setter
Ellen Floyd as they claimed their 12th straight victory and snapped SPU's five-match win streak.
The Falcons (8-10, 6-4) were led by nine kills on .571 hitting from rightside hitter Maddie Pruden, but the visitors were dominated in attack percentage (.322 to .149), aces (10-2) and blocks (12-1).
"Our serving game and our block were huge tonight, helping us really throw their hitters out of rhythm," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team was facing the only league opponent to force a fifth set against them this year. "That was another great overall team effort for us again."
Unlike in UAA's 25-21, 25-17, 16-25, 24-26, 15-12 win Sept. 17 in Seattle, the Seawolves took control early and never took their foot off the gas. Tied 6-6 in the opening set, Stephens finished a 3-0 run with her first ace of the night, and hosts slowly stretched the lead. A 4-0 Falcons spurt cut the advantage to 21-18, but Green called timeout and the Seawolves responded with four straight points of their own, capped by kills from
Leilani Elder and Stephens.
The second and third frames held less drama, with UAA outhitting SPU .267 to .056 and .357 to .094 to finish the match.
The GNAC leader in points, kills and aces per set, Stephens came through with her first errorless hitting performance of the season. The Palmer (Colony HS) native hit .565 for her second-best percentage this year, along with two assists, six digs and three block assists.
Outside hitters
Lisa Jaunet and
Nicole Blue tallied six kills apiece, while Elder added four kills and three block assists. Sophomore middle blocker
Isabel Evans assisted on a career-high-tying seven blocks, and senior libero
Talia Leauanae had 10 digs, three aces and was 17-of-17 on serve receptions.
UAA's 12 straight GNAC wins – dating to Nov. 18, 2021 – tie the third-longest streak in program history, while also clinching the program's 13th straight winning record in league play.
