Seawolves win top-10 tilt as Stephens slams record 33

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Eve Stephens blasted a record-setting 33 kills and Ellen Floyd dished 44 assists Saturday to power 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 25-12, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23 victory over 10th-ranked Western Washington in a battle of Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball powers at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (22-2, 12-1 GNAC) also got 25 assists from senior libero Talia Leauanae as they swept the season series from their rivals and snapped Western Washington's 31-match home win streak.

The Vikings (15-5, 10-2) were led by 13 kills from Gabby Kepley and 12 kills by Calley Heilborn, but the four-time defending GNAC champs could find no answer for Stephens – who ripped 24 kills in the final two sets – and were outhit .308 to .172 and outdug 76-56.

A senior rightside hitter from Palmer, Alaska, Stephens' 33 kills and 35.5 points broke the GNAC records for a four-set match, while her kills were the most by a Seawolf player in any match since the NCAA moved to rally scoring in 2001. The two-time AVCA Second Team All-American did her damage efficiently, hitting .477 (33-2-65), along with three assists, two blocks, nine digs and an ace.

"Coming off that loss, I couldn't be prouder of how we put that behind us, refocused and executed in a tough environment against a big-time opponent," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team had its 13-match win streak snapped Thursday at Simon Fraser. "It was an incredible match by Eve, and I think Ellen did her usual great job of getting her and all of her teammates involved with quality looks for those kills. Our serving and passing games were on point early, and we played some much-improved defense against a very good team."

After sweeping WWU on Sept. 22 in Anchorage, UAA took control of the rematch early, outhitting the Vikings .333 to .000 as they closed the first set with an 18-4 surge.

The Seawolves pulled away midway through the second set, with senior outside hitter Lisa Jaunet picking up four of her nine kills in that frame.

Going for unprecedented back-to-back sweeps in the series, the Seawolves grabbed a 13-11 midway through the third set. WWU answered with a 4-0 run, however, and never let the Seawolves closer than three points the rest of the way.

UAA trailed 16-11 in the fourth when Stephens truly took over, delivering kills on five of the next seven rallies to knot it 17-17. Nicole Blue knocked the last of her seven kills off the Vikings block on the next point to give UAA the lead for good. The teams traded points from there, and UAA earned a chance at match point when Tupu Lulogo's serve barely sailed long to make it 24-22. Heilborn kept the hosts alive with a kill, but Floyd fed Stephens for her final kill to end it.

In addition to increasing her UAA career assists record, Floyd also tallied five kills on .385 hitting, 17 digs and three aces.

Leauanae equaled her own UAA season high with her 25 digs, while freshman Madison Galloway came through with a career-high 13 digs.
