LACEY, Wash. – Senior outside hitter
Lisa Jaunet led a balanced attack with nine kills to help the 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team secure the outright Great Northwest Athletic Conference title Saturday with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 victory over Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.
The Seawolves (27-2, 17-1 GNAC) also got 23 assists and five kills from senior setter
Ellen Floyd as they edged four-time defending champion Western Washington by one match for the crown – their first since 2016 and fourth in the league's 21 years of competition.
The Saints (13-15, 3-15) got a match-high 10 kills from outside hitter Tia Allen, but could not overcome a combined 32 attack and service errors as their season came to an end.
"That was not a pretty victory tonight, but it's certainly a great feeling to accomplish our goal of winning the GNAC outright, and we as coaches could not be prouder of this group," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team tied his 2015 squad for the second-most victories in program history. "We will celebrate this tonight, before we begin our focus on the NCAA playoffs next week."
Seeking to extend their program-record 28-match win streak against the Saints, the Seawolves found themselves in an 18-18 first-set tie after a kill by Allen. Floyd answered with a kill, however, and
Nicole Blue served two of her career-high four aces to start a 7-2 clinching run for the visitors.
Reilly Plumhoff served seven straight points to help UAA pull away midway through the second frame, but the Seawolves had to play come-from-behind in the third.
Trailing 15-10, Jaunet ripped three kills during a 6-0 run, and the teams began to trade points. The Saints blocked an
Eve Stephens attack to make it 23-23, but SMU's Karla Soto served long on the next point, and Floyd – the GNAC's career aces leader – delivered an ace on match point.
In addition to her assists, Floyd hit for a match-high .417 attack percentage and made five digs.
Jaunet hit .400, while Stephens added nine kills, six digs and four total blocks.
Sophomore middle blocker Leilani Eder had a match-high six total blocks, and senior libero
Talia Leauanae led UAA with eight digs.
Currently ranked No. 1 in the region, UAA will learn its opponent for the upcoming NCAA West Regional Championships when the announcement of the national field is made Sunday at 6:30 p.m. AST on ncaa.com.
