LOWELL, MASS. – Alaska Anchorage completed the weekend sweep defeating No. 13 UMass Lowell 3-2 Saturday.
The sweep was the first on the road for Alaska Anchorage since Feb. 23-24, 2018 when it swept in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks 5-3, 3-2.
"Incredible performance by everyone in the lineup tonight," said head coach Matt Shasby. "Top to bottom had contributions from everyone. Great way to ring in the new year."
Both the River Hawks and Seawolves wasted no time scoring as both teams scored on their first shots of the game.
Isac Johnson fired a loose puck past Nolan Kent to give Lowell the early lead at 2:44 of the first period.
The lead only lasted 30 seconds as Matt Allen scored against his former team by redirected a shot by Brett Bamber to tie the game at 1-1.
The Seawolves took the lead thanks to Brandon Lajoie who scored his first career goal scoring on a rebound off a shot by William Gilson at 12:27 of the second period.
Caleb Hite extended the UAA lead to 3-1 with a late goal in the second period. Hite tapped in the rebound past River Hawk goalie Gustavs Davis Grigals, who was teammates with Hite last season at Alaska Fairbanks.
Carl Berglund cut the lead to 3-2 at 6:18 of the third period with his eighth goal of the season for Lowell.
The Seawolves were whistled for a costly boarding penalty giving the River Hawks a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 37 seconds. Luck was on the Seawolves side as the final shot for the River Hawks hit the pipe to preserve the win.
Nolan Kent finished with 26 saves in his second win of the season.
Both teams finished 0-for-2 on the powerplay, and UML out-shot the Seawolves 28-20.
Alaska Anchorage will play Maine Jan. 6-7.
