#25 UAA bounces back for 86-69 win in Canada

BURNABY, British Columbia – Jazzpher Evans scored 17 points and Vishe' Rabb delivered 13 points, nine rebounds and six steals Saturday to power the 25th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to an 86-69 victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (10-3, 2-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 15 points and a career-high five rebounds from senior guard Rachel Ingram as they shot a season-best 46.4 percent from the field. Rabb's six steals were also a career best, helping UAA turn 24 Simon Fraser turnovers into a 31-13 scoring advantage.

The Red Leafs (3-4, 1-2 GNAC) got 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting, nine rebounds and six blocks from center Gemma Cutler, but the hosts made just 11 of 22 free throws, while the Seawolves sank 16 of 19.

"I'm extremely proud of the resilience our players showed today after what happened the other night," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team suffered a 104-51 loss Thursday at No. 8 Western Washington. "They were able to put that game in the rearview mirror and showed tremendous focus and great execution against a very well-coached and talented team. This should give us some renewed confidence as we head into the heart of a very tough league schedule."

After facing significant first-quarter deficits in six of their last seven games against NCAA Div. II opponents, the Seawolves used a 9-0 run to end with a 20-14 lead. Ingram scored eight of her points in the opening 10 minutes, including a buzzer-beating trey from the corner to close it.

UAA led 38-33 at halftime, but the Red Leafs rallied ahead 45-42 on Jessica Wisotzki's fastbreak layup and held a 53-52 edge with three minutes left in the third quarter.

The Seawolves would take over from there, getting a go-ahead three-pointer from Evans and five straight points from freshman guard Elaina Mack during a 10-0 spurt to end the quarter. Evans scored in the paint to make it 68-60 with 8:18 to play, and senior guard Nicole Pinckney put the visitors up by double figures for good with a pull-up jumper at 6:45 mark.

Evans shot 7 of 15 from the field and grabbed two steals as the former Quincy University transfer established a new career scoring high as a Seawolf, while  Ingram shot 5 of 10 overall and 3 of 7 on treys, earning her second-most points this season.

Senior guard Jahnna Hajdukovich had nine points (4-4 FT), seven rebounds and two steals, Pinckney had eight points on 4-of-4 shooting, and junior guard Anaiah Moore added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting and two steals.

Sophomore forward Tubby Tovia led UAA with three assists.

The Seawolves return to the road next week for a single game, facing Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, Jan. 7 (3 p.m.) at the Patty Center. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
