Suffocating surge secures Seawolves' 7th straight, 76-55

BURNABY, British Columbia – Senior center Tennae Voliva had 22 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore guard Rachel Ingram scored 12 points Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team dominate the final three quarters for a 76-55 victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (17-4, 10-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points, three assists and two of their 18 steals from junior point guard Nicole Pinckney as they erased the largest first-quarter deficit in program history and won their seventh in a row.

SFU (10-12, 6-7 GNAC) was paced by 16 points from league preseason player-of-the-year Jessica Jones, who made her first six shots to lead the hosts to a 26-13 advantage after 10 minutes. The Canadians also got 15 points and seven rebounds from guard Jessica Wisotzki, but Jones was shut out the rest of the way as UAA held them to 9-of-42 (.214) shooting over the final three quarters.

"I'm extremely proud of the character we displayed tonight," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team came in with a No. 6 NCAA Div. II West Region ranking and in second place in the GNAC standings. "We took their best shot in the first quarter and gave up a disappointing run after we'd fought back to tie it late in the second quarter, but our ladies continued to keep the same mentality and worked their butts off all night long. In addition to our execution, I'm most pleased with how we kept the momentum rolling and never let them back in the game."

Playing the third of five straight road games, the Seawolves stayed within striking distance behind senior forward Lauren Johnson, who scored eight of her nine points in the opening half.

Coming off consecutive 90-plus scoring efforts in wins over Northwest Nazarene, SFU led 40-32 at the break, but the hosts' momentum fizzled in the final 20 minutes.

UAA grabbed its first lead since the opening possession when freshman guard Malie Marfil went coast to coast for a layup to make it 45-44 with 4:51 left in the third quarter. A steal-and-score by Jazzpher Evans was followed by a trey from Ingram and two layups from Voliva, helping UAA flip the momentum entirely with a 13-0 run.

The Seawolves led 54-45 after three quarters and shot 50 percent – including 4 of 6 from three-point range – in the fourth to pull away.

On the heels of a career-high 23 points in Saturday's 74-62 win at Alaska Fairbanks, Voliva topped the 20-point plateau for the third time in four games, shooting 8 of 13 from the field and 6 of 6 on free throws. The East Anchorage High School also produced added two assists, three steals and a block on the same day she was named a candidate for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Ingram shot 4 of 8 from long range and tied her career high with three steals, while junior forward Kimani Fernandez fought through foul trouble to contribute eight points on 4-of-4 shooting.

Trying to extend their GNAC regular-season title streak to seven, UAA's final two road contests are fellow contenders Western Washington (Sat., 6 p.m. AST) and Central Washington (Mon., 4:15 p.m. AST). Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
