ANCHORAGE – Senior center
Oggie Pantovic had 21 points and seven rebounds for host Alaska Anchorage, but hot-shooting Western Oregon took over with a big first-half run Thursday for an 85-78 men's basketball victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (13-8, 8-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 17 points and three assists from junior guard
Tobin Karlberg as they suffered their first home defeat in 10 games this season, and were likely eliminated from regular-season GNAC title contention.
The Wolves (7-16, 6-9) were led by 21 points and eight assists from guard Yosani Clay as the visitors shot 56 percent from the floor and knocked down 11 of 26 (.423) three-pointers, earning a season sweep of UAA.
Coming off a 19-of-31 three-point shooting effort five days ago in a blowout of Alaska Fairbanks, the Seawolves could never find their stroke from long range Thursday, missing nine of their first 10 and finishing 8 of 32.
Senior
David Rowlands gave UAA a 7-0 lead on a three-pointer two minutes into the game, but the visitors from Monmouth would catch fire from that point, making 15 of their next 22 shots to grab a 37-23 lead with five minutes left in the half.
The Wolves led 44-34 at halftime and twice pushed their advantage to 17 points in the second half. Despite trailing 72-58 with just six minutes remaining, the Seawolves were able to whittle the deficit to 81-76 in the final 30 seconds, but could get no closer.
Rowlands finished with 12 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while senior forward
Hunter Sweet chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists.
