ANCHORAGE – Senior center
Tennae Voliva scored 15 points and junior guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich sank a three-pointer at the buzzer Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team avoid Western Oregon's upset bid with a 66-65 victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
Ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, the Seawolves (19-5, 12-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points from freshman guard
Jazzpher Evans as they stayed alive for a chance at their seventh straight GNAC regular-season title.
The Wolves (8-16, 4-13) were led by 17 points, six rebounds and four assists from guard Cali McClave, while guard Princy Paaluhi-Clark added 15 points, including a tiebreaking jump shot with 1.9 seconds remaining.
"Aside from the rebounding column and the final score, Western Oregon outplayed us in most every facet of that game," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team won the battle of the boards 44-30 – its largest margin of the season. "We struggled to get stops all night, and some of our good looks weren't going in the basket, but we showed a lot of grit, and thank goodness we executed that last play perfectly."
Despite coming into the game with a school-record 34-game winning streak against the Wolves, the Seawolves would battle back and forth all night with the visitors from Monmouth. UAA forged the largest lead for either team when Evans made an off-balance layup to make it 27-18 with 7:05 left in the first half.
WOU answered with a 14-4 run to retake the lead right before halftime, and the game would go to the fourth quarter tied 48-48.
In a contest featuring eight ties and 14 lead changes, neither team would lead by more than four in the final quarter, when the Wolves took a 56-52 advantage with 6:45 to play.
After a Voliva layup gave UAA a 59-58 edge, McClave answered to put her team back on top with 2:51 left. Hajdukovich – who had not scored in the first 37 minutes – nailed a three-pointer from the corner on a nice pass from
Nicole Pinckney retake the lead, but WOU point guard Tresai McCarver banked in a short jumper to tie it 29 seconds later.
Facing a 63-61 deficit, UAA senior forward
Lauren Johnson got free inside and converted a lob pass from Hajdukovich to tie the game with 18 seconds remaining, and WOU called timeout. With the clock winding down, Paaluhi-Caulk dribbled out of a double team and sank an eight-foot jumper with 1.9 seconds showing, prompting McCarthy to use his final timeout.
With the ball advancing to halfcourt for an out-of-bounds throw-in under NCAA women's rules, the Seawolves were able to execute the final play to perfection. The GNAC's second-leading three-point percentage shooter (.381) coming into the night, Hajdukovich rolled off a screen by Voliva and received the long lob pass from senior
Stephanie Jackson, stepping into the game-winning shot in rhythm for a swish.
The local Dimond High product also added five rebounds and three assists, while committing just one turnover in 29 minutes.
Johnson finished with 11 points, two assists and no turnovers, tying Voliva for game-high honors with six rebounds. Pinckney dished five assists with just one turnover, and sophomore guard
Rachel Ingram added seven points.
Evans shot 6 of 11 from the field, along with two assists, three rebounds and no turnovers.
The Seawolves play their regular-season finale against Saint Martin's on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. With a victory and a Western Washington loss at Simon Fraser, UAA would likely claim its seventh consecutive GNAC regular-season title, although final calculations of the league's 'points ranking system' will not be officially revealed until late Saturday or early Sunday.
