LACEY, Wash. – Senior center
Tennae Voliva scored 20 points but the 2nd-seeded Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could never recover from an early deficit Friday, falling 80-65 to 3rd-seeded Central Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Championships semifinals at Marcus Pavilion.
The regionally 6th-ranked Seawolves (20-6) also got 13 points and four steals from
Jazzpher Evans as the defending tournament champions were outshot 50 percent to 41 percent overall and 49 percent (16 of 33) to 28 percent (5 of 18) from three-point range.
The regionally 4th-ranked Wildcats (22-7) got a game-high 22 points from guard Kizzah Maltezo and a 16-point, 13-rebound, nine-assist showing from center Samantha Bowman, snapping a 19-game losing streak against UAA.
"We did not follow our game plan from the opening tip and gave way too many open looks to their excellent three-point shooters," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team had beaten CWU in the previous two GNAC tournament semifinals. "This was a very disappointing showing, but we will regroup and hope to hear our name called Sunday night (when the NCAA Tournament field is announced)."
After sweeping the home-and-home series in the regular season, the Seawolves fell behind on the game's opening possession and trailed 12-0 before Voliva cracked the scoring ice with a layup.
The Wildcats stretched their lead to 24-9 by the end of the first quarter and went to the locker room with a 37-25 advantage, shooting 8 for 17 on three-pointers in the half.
The Seawolves whittled their deficit to 54-45 on a three-pointer by
Jahnna Hajdukovich late in the third quarter, but could get no closer.
Voliva shot 6 of 10 from the field and 8 of 8 at the free-throw line, along with a career-high six assists.
Hajdukovich added 10 points and four rebounds, and junior guard
Ra'Anaa Bey led UAA with a career-high six rebounds.
The announcement of the NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships field will be made at 6 p.m. AST Sunday at ncaa.com.
