Hockey adds defenseman Hamelin

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – University of Alaska Anchorage head hockey coach Matt Shasby announced that veteran defenseman Derek Hamelin will join the Seawolves for the 2022-23 season after a four-year career at Canisius.

"Derek is the final veteran piece to our backend we were looking for to come in and provide leadership and stability," said head coach Matt Shasby. "He is an elite skater and puck mover who will be able to play heavy minutes against the top teams in college hockey."

Hamelin, a 5-11, 170 lbs., defenseman, finished with 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) in 70 games for Canisius. The native of Mercier, Quebec was a two-time Atlantic Hockey Association All-Academic selection.

Prior to his time with the Griffons, Hamelin played two seasons of junior hockey with the Omaha Lancers (USHL) and Langley Rivermen (BCHL). He finished his junior career with 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 71 games.
