#20 UAA flattens Findlay as Floyd reaches 4K

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Eve Stephens smashed a season-high 20 kills and fellow senior Ellen Floyd surpassed another career milestone Thursday to lead the 20th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-8, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of Findlay in the Ice Block Classic at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (8-0) also got 10 kills from senior outside hitter Lisa Jaunet as they won for the seventh time via sweep this season and recorded a .400-plus attack percentage for the fourth time. Floyd dished 39 assists to become the seventh player in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history to surpass the 4,000 mark. The two-time all-league performer now ranks sixth with 4,012.

The Oilers (0-4), from Ohio and the Great Midwest Conference, were led by 11 kills from outside hitter Norah Painter.

"We had some hiccups midway through second set, but overall we got the job done again tonight," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team is off to the third-best start in program history. "Ellen did a great job as usual of setting our hitters with great looks, and they delivered."

UAA dominated the first set, starting with seven straight points and ending with the last eight. The Seawolves hit .536 (15 kills, 0 errors, 28 attacks) as Stephens racked up seven kills on nine swings.

A Stephens ace made it a 13-9 lead in the second set, but Findlay took advantage of three rare UAA attack errors to start a 7-0 surge of its own. Down 20-17, the Seawolves finally answered with five straight kills – including three in a row from Stephens – as they closed the frame with an 8-1 surge.

Tied 12-12 in the third, the Oilers committed consecutive attack errors and never recovered. Jaunet gave UAA leads of 16-13 and 19-14 with kills, and Stephens ripped four straight kills for a 24-19 edge, setting up Nicole Blue's kill on match point.

Stephens hit .528 as her 20 kills were the second-most by a Seawolf this year and the most in a three-setter. Blue finished with six kills and sophomore middle blocker Isabel Evans tallied four kills on six attacks with four total blocks.

UAA outdug the Ohioans 48-33, led by 13 from senior libero Talia Leauanae and eight apiece from Floyd and freshman defensive specialist Madison Galloway.

The Seawolves return to the Patty Center for two matches Friday, facing Florida Southern at noon and Black Hills State at 5 p.m. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to free live video and stats links.
