#14 Seawolves swat Yellowjackets in GNAC road opener

BILLINGS, Mont. – Senior Eve Stephens delivered another huge offensive effort and sophomore Nicole Blue added nine kills Thursday to help 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage begin the road portion of its league schedule with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 volleyball victory over Montana State Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (13-1, 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 15 kills on .538 hitting, four aces and three block assists from Stephens as they outhit the hosts .359 to .105, with senior setter Ellen Floyd tallying 26 assists.

The Yellowjackets (6-4, 0-3) were led by nine kills apiece from Caty Havekost and Olivia Schwartz.

"It was encouraging to see our offense execute far better than we did last week," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team had led the nation in hitting percentage prior to two sub.-200 performances in last week's home wins over Saint Martin's and Western Oregon. "Eve was terrific as usual, but it was Nicole and Lisa (Jaunet) complementing her on the other side with such strong hitting that kept Billings from ever getting a chance to make a run."

Looking for their fifth straight win, the Seawolves broke open a tight first set with four straight points to make it 18-14, capped by an ace from Makana Eleneki. Blue got into the act with a pair of kills and Jaunet added one of her seven kills on set point as UAA ended the frame with an 11-3 spurt.

Jaunet and Stephens each tallied a pair of kills in a 12-2 run to open the second set, and UAA hit a scorching .476 (10 kills-0 errors-21 attacks) in the third to complete the sweep – their third straight to open GNAC play.

Blue hit .444 and added five digs, while Stephens had at least three aces for the fourth match in a row. A two-time All-America rightside hitter from Palmer (Colony HS), Stephens entered the week as the only player in NCAA Div. II to rank in the top 25 nationally in kills, points and aces per set.

The Seawolves complete their road trip Saturday with a 1 p.m. ADT first serve against Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
