Pinckney caps Seawolf rally with OT game winner

ANCHORAGE – Jazzpher Evans scored six of her 16 points in overtime and Nicole Pinckney drained the game-winning jumper with 2.5 seconds remaining Thursday to lift the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a thrilling 73-71 victory over Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (13-6, 5-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, no turnovers and two steals from senior guard Jahnna Hajdukovich as they swept the season series from the Canadians.

The Red Leafs (6-8, 4-6) got a game-high 22 points from GNAC scoring leader Jessica Wisotzki and 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks from NCAA Div. II blocks leader Gemma Cutler, but the visitors were outrebounded 49-43 and hurt by 20 turnovers.

UAA grabbed 23 offensive rebounds and committed just nine turnovers of its own, rallying from a 59-46 early fourth-quarter deficit.

"Down 13 and with seemingly everything going against us, our ladies found a way to get it done somehow tonight," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, who earned a ninth straight win over SFU. "Our defense in the fourth quarter was the key as we got big stop after big stop down the stretch, and we just seemed to ride that momentum and gain confidence even though our shots weren't falling. And for Nicole – a sixth-year senior who has overcome a major knee injury and been such a big part of our program's success – to hit the game winner, that was pretty special."

Despite shooting well against the Red Leafs in an 86-69 victory in the first meeting on New Year's Eve in Canada, the Seawolves struggled from the floor for most of the night in the rematch, hitting at just 27.7 percent through three quarters.

Wisotzki started the fourth quarter with one of her five three-pointers to make it 59-46, but UAA would rally from there, scoring on its next four possessions. Pinckney and Vishe' Rabb sandwiched baskets around the five-minute mark to cap the tying 13-0 run, before Sophia Wisotzki snapped a six-minute Simon Fraser scoreless drought with two free throws with 3:37 left.

After Jessica Wisotzki scored on a putback with 1:53 remaining, Evans pulled the same trick on the other end with 48 seconds left for the final points of regulation. Hajdukovich grabbed a steal to stop the Red Leafs' final chance, but Pinckney's pull-up 12-footer bounced off the rim at the regulation buzzer.

Cutler scored inside on the first possession of overtime, however the Red Leafs would not lead again after Evans drained a three-pointer and finished her second traditional three-point play of the night for a personal 6-0 run.

Cutler tied it 69-69 with a short jumper with 1:25 left before two Seawolf offensive rebounds led to free throws for Rabb, who made one of two. After a Red Leaf miss, Pinckney split a pair of free throws for a 71-69 edge, only to see SFU forward Sophie Klassen swish a short jumper with nine seconds remaining.

Following a timeout, Pinckney took the inbounds pass and dribbled horizontally toward the top of the key, swishing her 17-foot jumper with 2.5 seconds remaining. The Red Leafs advanced the ball to the frontcourt with a timeout, but the Seawolves defended well and Georgia Swant's desperation heave was well short at the buzzer.

Evans finished 6 of 12 from the field and grabbed three of UAA's 11 steals, while Pinckney scored 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting and did not commit a turnover in 29 minutes of action. Pinckney also had three assists and grabbed the second-most rebounds of her career with six.

Senior forward Vishe' Rabb finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, and junior Hayley Berfield helped UAA stay within striking distance, scoring all nine of her points in the first three quarters.

The Seawolves play the second of three consecutive home games when they host 11th-ranked and league-leading Western Washington (15-2, 9-1) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets and live links.
