#16 Wildcats earn first sweep at Alaska Airlines Center

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 12) – Ellie Marble and Scottie Ellsworth combined for 25 kills and No. 16 Central Washington used a huge third-set comeback Thursday to earn a 25-23, 25-21, 27-25 volleyball sweep of Alaska Anchorage at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (11-12, 3-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) were led by eight kills apiece from juniors Leilani Elder and Bethany Tuchardt, but the hosts were outhit .164 to .096.

The Wildcats (12-4, 6-2) got 14 kills and nine digs from Marble, while middle blocker Emma Daoud-Hebert recorded eight kills on .500 hitting and six total blocks. Senior setter Tia Andaya – the GNAC Preseason Player of the Year – finished with 36 assists and 11 digs to help Central earn just its second win in nine trips to the Alaska Airlines Center, along with a 3-2 victory from 2018.

A freshman outside hitter, Marble recorded five kills in the opening set, including on match point after the Seawolves had sliced a 24-19 deficit to 24-23.

The second frame featured 10 ties and five lead changes before the Wildcats took command late, snapping a 20-20 tie on an ace by Andaya. After Bella Burney ended a 4-0 run with a kill to make it 24-21, Marble answered again with another set-point kill.

The Seawolves seemed destined to push the match to a fourth set, jumping to leads of 9-0 and 17-4 in the third, but the Wildcats stormed back with a huge surge to quiet the home crowd. Daoud-Hebert and Andaya blocked Nicole Blue to draw within 23-22, and Central tied it for the first time in the set when Blue hit her next attack into the net. Isabel Evans gave UAA a set point with a kill to make it 25-24, but Marble ended a marathon rally with a kill to tie it, and Ellsworth delivered the last two of her 11 kills on the next rallies to seal the win.

Evans finished with six kills, and Blue led the Seawolves with 15 digs. Elder led UAA with a .412 attack percentage and had a match-high six block assists.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. to host Northwest Nazarene (8-8, 4-4 GNAC) in their 'Pack the House' promotional night, sponsored by ConocoPhillips Alaska. In addition to $5 tickets (half price), one lucky fan will win a round-trip ticket on Alaska Airlines, and there will be giveaways of glow-in-the-dark mini volleyballs.
