SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. – Max Helgeson scored for Alaska Anchorage, but Lake Superior State scored five unanswered goals on its way to a 5-1 win Friday.
"We had a decent start, but we can't take penalties and allow a team get momentum especially on the road," said head coach Matt Shasby. "Lots to learn tonight and hopefully be better tomorrow."
Helgeson beat LSSU goalie Ethan Langenegger five-hole for a power-play goal at 9:05 of the first period.
Cole Craft scored the first Laker goal at 10:10 of the first period as the two teams entered the first intermission tied at 1.
Jared Westcott scored a backdoor goal on the powerplay at 5:58, and Connor Milburn scored on a 3-on-1 at 13:22 of the second period.
Tyler Williams netted a quick goal for the Lakers just 27 seconds into the third period, and Carter Batchelder completed the scoring when he scored off a rebound at 5:21.
Alaska Anchorage was 1-for-3 on the power play, and Lake Superior State finished 1-for-5
The Lakers out-shot the Seawolves 41-35.
Joey Lamoreaux finished with 36 saves in net for UAA.
The two teams will close out the weekend series Saturday.
