ANCHORAGE (Nov. 16) – Senior
Nicole Blue delivered 17 kills and junior
Leilani Elder matched her career high with 11 kills Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team end its season with a 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-15 win over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (16-17, 8-10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got career-best efforts from all three of their departing players as
Reilly Plumhoff produced six aces,
Isabel Evans had nine total blocks, and Blue made five total blocks. UAA outhit its rival from the north .279 to .162 to sweep the season series and improve to 9-0 all-time against the Nanooks at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Nanooks (14-18, 7-11) were led by 10 kills from middle blocker Ella Bines, but the visitors could not retain the momentum from their opening-set win as they were outblocked 13-5.
"What a terrific way for all of our seniors to go out in their last match. They all played tremendously tonight," said UAA's
Stacie Meisner, who completed her first year as head coach of her alma mater. "Leilani was excellent, too. I couldn't be happier for this whole group tonight to go out on a winning note.
"While we'll miss our seniors, I think that we are set up for success in the future, and I know all of our returning players will be eager to get back on the court for our spring season."
After sweeping UAF in quick fashion in the first GNAC match of the season Sept. 7 in Fairbanks, the Seawolves found themselves in an early deficit in the rematch.
UAA took early control of the second set, however, jumping to a 9-3 lead behind three kills from Blue, and fighting off a late UAF rally when Elder dinked an off-speed kill on set point.
The Seawolves' offense started to hit its stride in the third set as Blue, Elder and
Bethany Tuchardt all claimed three kills in the frame. Trailing 14-10, UAA began chipping away and made it 20-20 when Blue and Elder combined to block Bines. The Seawolves ended it with a 7-1 run, capped by an ace from Plumhoff.
The offensive momentum carried into the fourth and intensified as UAA hit .586 (18 kills, 1 error, 29 attacks) to pull away early. Blue had five kills on eight fourth-set swings to end her four-year career with 782 kills – No. 17 on the program's career list. She also had one ace, falling just one shy of tying O'Lita McWilliams's single-season school record of 59 from 2003 (when sets went to 30 points).
Plumhoff managed six assists and 10 digs to go with her 6-to-1 ace-to-service error ratio. The Dimond High product finished her career with 119 aces to tie for No. 10 on the program list.
Meanwhile, Evans topped her career-high total blocks by one, along with six kills on .333 hitting. The Montana native also placed in the program's top 10 with a 1.08 blocks per set average (No. 7).
Elder matched her career best of 11 kills with red-hot hitting numbers, too, swinging at a .500 (11-1-20) rate.
Sophomore
Madison Galloway made a match-high 15 digs, and junior setters
Makana Eleneki and
Kadyn Osborne combined for 35 assists.
