ANCHORAGE (Nov. 2) –
Nicole Blue had 15 kills and
Bethany Tuchardt collected four of her 13 kills in the fourth set Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team earn a 25-20, 25-13, 16-25, 25-23 victory over Western Oregon at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (14-15, 6-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a career-high 11 kills from freshman
Bella Burney and 21 assists from junior libero
Reilly Plumhoff as they beat the visitors from Monmouth for the 21st straight time.
The Wolves (8-13, 2-11) got a match-high 17 kills from outside hitter Madison Hornback, but were outhit .202 to .168 and outdug 77-68.
"We didn't execute as well in the final two sets as we did to start the match, but we got some timely kills and key blocks late in the fourth set that gave us the win," said UAA head coach
Stacie Meisner. "Our setters also played very well, especially with their decisions on when to attack the ball tonight."
UAA's pair of junior setters –
Makana Eleneki and
Kadyn Osborne – finished with six kills on just 10 attacks and a .500 hitting percentage. Eleneki dished 31 assists and came one shy of her career high with 14 digs, while Osborne tied her career high with four kills, along with 16 assists and four total blocks.
Three of Osborne's kills came in heroic fashion off errant passes in the opening set, and Burney collected five kills to help erase an early 9-6 deficit in the first.
UAA connected at a .405 clip (19 kills-2errors-42 attacks) in the second to lead from start to finish, but the Wolves bounced back to outslug the Seawolves .345 to .125 in the third.
The final frame featured 13 ties and three lead changes before UAA pulled it out late. Trailing 19-16, Burney started a 5-0 run with a kill and ended it on a block alongside
Isabel Evans. Finley Buman and Chloe Asciutto combined to stuff a Blue attack to make it 22-22, but the Seawolves responded with a block from Evans and Osborne, followed by one of Evans' eight kills. Hartsook kept her team alive with a kill, but Meisner called a timeout and the Seawolves executed perfectly for a 'first-ball' kill from Tuchardt on match point.
Plumhoff finished with six assists, two aces and no service errors as she came just two digs shy of her career high, while defensive specialist
Madison Galloway contributed 15 digs. Blue added 11 digs to collect her ninth double-double of the year.
The Seawolves are back at the Alaska Airlines Center at 7 p.m. Saturday to face Saint Martin's in their penultimate home match of the season. Tickets and live links are available a GoSeawolves.com.
