Hockey upsets #6 Wisconsin

MADISON, WIS. – Alaska Anchorage was out-shot 41-21 but scored when it mattered to pull off the upset at No. 6 Wisconsin 1-0 Friday.

"Amazing performance by Jared Whale," said head coach Matt Shasby, regarding Whale who finished with 41 saves for his fifth win of the season. "Our guys found a way to get a lead going into the third period, and we committed to playing well on the defensive side of the puck to close it out."

Freshman Gunnar VanDamme couldn't have picked a better time to score his first career goal than the game-winner to upset No. 6 Wisconsin on the road. The native of Pittsford, N.Y. beat Wisconsin goalie Kyle McClellan five-hole at 18:26 of the second period.

Ben Almquist recorded his team-leading ninth assist of the season on the play, and Jarred White collected his fourth assist.

Alaska Anchorage was scoreless on their two powerplay opportunities and held Wisconsin 0-for-6.

The Badgers won the face-off battle 34-8.

The win was the first for Alaska Anchorage over a ranked opponent since it defeated No. 14 Penn State 6-5 on Oct. 27th. The Seawolves are 2-1 against the Big Ten this season.

UAA and UW will close out the weekend series Saturday.
