ANCHORAGE (Nov. 25) – Senior forward
Sawyer Storms led another balanced scoring effort with 14 points and five assists Saturday to help Alaska Anchorage stay unbeaten with a 66-52 men's basketball victory over Adams State at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (8-0) also got 12 points apiece from junior guard
Dillon Barrientos and senior forward
Jaron Williams as they extended the best start in program history, using a 38-24 rebounding advantage to pull away.
The Grizzlies (2-4) got 13 points and five assists from guard Destan Williams, but the visitors from Alamosa, Colo., were outshot 51 percent to 37 percent as they lost to UAA for the second night in a row.
"Our defense stepped up again tonight," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team overcame an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers. "Even when we missed a few open looks and started turning the ball over in the second half, we were able to get back defensively and make things hard for their half-court offense. It's good to have another growing experience and still get a win, and hopefully we can take more strides when we open conference play with a pair of tough road games next week."
Following Friday's 83-67 win over the Grizzlies, the Seawolves raced to a 20-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the rematch, and took a 24-8 advantage on
Hasaan Herrington's layup at the 9:20 mark. Barrientos drained a three-pointer just before halftime to push it to 40-22, and
Sloan Lentfer put back his own miss with 18 minutes remaining for a 47-22 lead.
UAA would make only one field goal over the next 13 minutes, but was able to hold Adams State at bay by making 10 of 15 free throws – all in the final 9 minutes, 20 seconds.
Storms shot 5 of 6 from the field and 4 of 4 at the free throw line, along with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, helping the Seawolves shoot 19 of 30 (.633) from two-point range.
Barrientos shot 4 of 8 overall (2-4 3FG) and Williams was 5 of 7 (1-1 3FG), along with four assists and three rebounds.
Senior guard
Tyson Gilbert had 11 points (4-8 FG), six rebounds and two steals, while Lentfer registered six points (3-6 FG) and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Seawolves open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with road games next week at Montana State Billings (Thur., 5:30 pm AST) and Seattle Pacific (Sat., 3:15 pm AST). Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
