Adams State hands UAA another one-point loss

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 25) – Senya Rabouin scored 19 points and Tori Hollingshead delivered a double-double, but a late comeback attempt came up short Saturday for the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team in a 66-65 loss to Adams State at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (2-3) got 15 points and 10 rebounds from Hollingshead, plus 10 points from guard Kya Pearson, as they were hurt by 27 turnovers.

The Grizzlies (5-3) were led by 15 points apiece from Elaina Watson and Kiiyani Anitielu, helping the visitors from Alamosa, Colo., overcome a 39-29 rebounding disadvantage and a 26-14 second-quarter deficit.

Trying to avenge an 83-82 setback Friday night to the same squad, the Seawolves earned a 17-11 lead after one quarter and took a 35-24 edge into the halftime break.

The Grizzlies continued to chip away, though, and earned their first lead at 43-42 when Angeline Nageak ripped the ball from Jaisa Gamble and coasted in for an easy layup with three minutes left in the third quarter.

Hollingshead scored four straight points to knot it 57-57 with three minutes left in the game, but the Grizzlies answered with a 9-3 run capped by another steal and layup from Anitielu with 1:47 remaining.

UAA took advantage of a technical foul on Nageak when Rabouin swished two free throws, and a three-pointer by Elaina Mack made it 66-65 with 45 seconds left. The Seawolves got the defensive stop they needed when Nageak's shot rolled off with 19 seconds remaining, but the hosts were unable to convert, with Hollinghead's layup coming up short with five seconds left.

Rabouin finished 6 of 12 from the floor (3-6 3FG) and dished four assists, while Pearson shot 3 of 5 and grabbed five rebounds. Gamble gave the Seawolves a big lift off the bench with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting and five rebounds, while Mack had seven points and four rebounds.

The Seawolves begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week with a pair of road games, starting Thursday at 3:15 pm AST against Montana State Billings. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
