ANCHORAGE (Nov. 4) –
Tyson Gilbert scored 22 points and fellow senior
Sawyer Storms notched a double-double to lead the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to an 88-53 victory over Cal Maritime on Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (2-0) got 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting and 11 rebounds from Storms, plus 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from junior forward
Bishop Tosi, outshooting the NAIA squad .462 to .358 and outrebounding them 46-30.
The Keelhaulers (0-3) were led by 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from guard DeAndre Minor, but the visitors from Vallejo, Calif., fell behind 12-2 in the opening three minutes and never recovered.
"I thought our ball movement and our overall defense were a lot better than yesterday," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team beat the same team 86-69 on Friday. "I think in these first two games we've shown that we have a much deeper lineup than in recent seasons, and it'll be exciting to see how much we can improve going forward, starting with two big West Region tests next week."
After jumping to the early lead, UAA saw Cal Maritime pull within 21-12 midway through the first half, but the hosts got five quick bench points on a three by
Caleb Larsen and a layup by freshman
Lyman Simmons to take a double-figure lead for good.
The Seawolves led 40-19 at halftime and pushed their advantage as high as 88-50 with a minute remaining.
Senior guard
Dathan Satchell gave UAA four double-figure scorers with 10 points, while sophomore transfer
Hasaan Herrington tallied seven points on 3-of-5 shooting, highlighted by a crowd-pleasing alley-oop dunk from freshman point guard
Trey Evans (3 assists).
Junior point guard
Dillon Barrientos dished nine assists and collected six rebounds, while Simmons and senior forward
Jaron Williams had six points apiece.
The Seawolves begin the NCAA Div. II portion of their schedule with critical West Region games against Chaminade (Fri., 4:45 pm) and Hawaii Pacific (Sat., 3 pm) in Fairbanks. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
