SEATTLE (Dec. 2) – Junior point guard
Dillon Barrientos scored 18 points and dished three assists, but the 23rd-ranked Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not slow an efficient Seattle Pacific offense Saturday in an 80-75 loss at Brougham Pavilion.
The Seawolves (8-2, 0-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points and eight rebounds from senior forward
Sawyer Storms as they lost despite committing just five turnovers and making 34 trips to the free-throw line.
The Falcons (5-7, 1-1) were led by 20 points from Shaw Anderson and 11 rebounds from Jadin Penigar as they shot 31 charities themselves in a game that featured 57 total fouls. SPU finished 26 of 39 overall from the field, making 20 of 24 two-point attempts.
"We could not find a consistent offensive rhythm, and we were unable to stop their interior passing that led to a lot of easy layups for them," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team outscored SPU 21-7 in points off turnovers, but was outscored 36-20 in the paint. "We also had a tough injury to
Sloan Lentfer midway through the first half that really hurt our interior defense as well."
The Seawolves took control in the early going for a 20-14 lead on a
Jaron Williams basket, and Barrientos scored five points in the final four minutes of the half for a 33-30 lead.
The first 10 minutes of the second half featured seven ties and seven lead changes, with UAA pulling ahead for the final time when a Storms three-point play made it 56-54. Anderson tied it with two free throws, and the Falcons took control for good with an 11-3 run, capped by a three-pointer from Maui Sze at the 5:36 mark for a 69-60 lead.
UAA cut the deficit to four points twice in the final minute, but could not make it a one-possession game again.
Barrientos shot 6 of 11 from the field and 5 of 6 on free throws, while Storms equaled his UAA high with four steals. Senior guard
Tyson Gilbert had 12 points, two assists and no turnovers, and Williams finished with nine points, six rebounds and two steals off the bench.
UAA's five turnovers matched the ninth-fewest in program history.
The Seawolves get a 14-day break before their next games, returning to non-conference play for the final time with three contests at the Hoops In Hawaii Classic in Honolulu, Dec. 17-19.
