SEATTLE (Feb. 23) – Junior forward
Vishe' Rabb delivered 28 points and eight rebounds to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team secure a Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament berth Thursday with a 64-54 victory over Seattle Pacific at Brougham Pavilion.
The Seawolves (17-9, 9-8 GNAC) also got 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from sophomore guard
Jazzpher Evans as they clinched fourth place and avoided missing the league tournament – which takes the top six finishers – for the first time since it began in 2011.
The Falcons (13-12, 8-9) – ranked No. 10 in the NCAA West Region – were led by 16 points and seven rebounds from forward Natalie Hoff and 13 points from guard Anna Eddy, but the hosts were outshot .413 to .368 and outscored 21-8 at the free-throw line.
"This was a big-pressure game with a lot on the line, and I'm really proud of the way we answered the bell, especially when SPU made its run there in the third quarter," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team swept the season series and won its ninth straight over the Falcons. "Vishe' put up big numbers again, but that shouldn't distract from the fact that this was a total team effort, with some hidden clutch performances in the box score, especially from people like
Tubby Tovia (2 points, 4 rebounds, no turnovers, one steal) with her defense and rebounding."
The reigning GNAC Player of the Week after totaling 54 points in home wins over Saint Martin's and Western Oregon, Rabb continued her hot streak by shooting 7 of 14 from the floor, 3 of 6 from long range and 11 of 11 at the foul stripe. The Minnesota native added a pair of assists as she became the first Seawolf since Autummn Williams in Feb. 2017 to score at least 25 points in three straight games.
After seeing a 33-23 halftime lead evaporate into a 43-42 deficit late in the third quarter, it was Rabb who provided the game-changing play. Cut off by a Falcon trap on a baseline drive, she pivoted multiple times and, unable to find a passing outlet, flipped a successful shot over Hoff and drew the foul.
Rabb followed the three-point play with two more charities as the Seawolves began an 11-0 surge spanning the quarter break, and the lead stayed at least eight points the rest of the way.
Rachel Ingram had seven points on 2-of-3 long-range accuracy, while fellow senior guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich finished with six points and five rebounds.
The Seawolves finish the regular season with a 5:30 p.m. AST tip Saturday at No. 22 Montana State Billings. UAA will likely face SPU again in GNAC Tournament quarterfinals on Mar. 2 in Bellingham, Wash. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links for both games.
