ANCHORAGE (May 23) – One of Alaska's top former prep players is headed home through the transfer portal as Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team
Rusty Osborne announced Tuesday that
Hasaan Herrington has signed a scholarship agreement to play for the Seawolves.
A 6-3, 215-pound guard, the Anchorage native spent the last two campaigns at fellow NCAA Div. II program Texas-Tyler, where he redshirted in 2021-22. In his collegiate debut season last year, Herrington averaged 3.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game, while posting a 3-to-1 assist-turnover ratio and shooting .793 from the free throw line. He came on strong at the end of the year, boosting his average to 5.7 ppg and posting season-high numbers of 10 points and nine rebounds against UT Permian Basin.
"We couldn't be more excited to welcome Hasaan back home," said Osborne, whose roster also features fellow Alaskans
Luke Devine (Wasilla),
Sloan Lentfer (Anchorage/Grace Christian), and Herrington's former East teammate
Jaron Williams. "We recruited him out of high school, but were unable to offer him a scholarship because of the Covid waivers we received for our seniors that season. At UTT he had a solid freshman year with some very good performances, and worked his way into the starting lineup by the end of the season."
Herrington was a two-time First Team All-State performer at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School, where he captured Cook Inlet Conference MVP honors and led the T-birds to an undefeated season and the ASAA 4A State title as a senior in 2021.
"Hasaan has a high basketball IQ and has been well prepared by two outstanding coaches in Chuck Martin and Louis Wilson," Osborne added. "He gives us a strong, athletic, versatile guard to match up with similar guards we will face. He can get to the basket, rebound and defend at a high level. As with other young players, we expect him to make a big jump in his sophomore season. It will be exciting to have in in the Green & Gold the next three years."
Herrington becomes the fifth member of UAA's 2023 recruiting class, joining fellow transfer
Malik Jackson (6-6, G/F, Castro Valley, Calif./Dublin HS/Peninsula College), along with prep signees
Trey Evans (6-5, PG, South Jordan, Utah/Real Salt Lake Academy),
Sloan Lentfer (6-7, F, Anchorage/Grace Christian HS) and
Lyman Simmons (6-10, F/C, St. George, Utah/Real Salt Lake Academy).
