ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (Sept. 15) –
Bethany Tuchardt matched her career high with 14 kills Friday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its second sweep of the day with a 25-22, 27-25, 25-21 decision over tournament co-host Ouachita Baptist at the Reddie-Tiger Invitational at the Sturgis PE Center.
Senior
Nicole Blue added 12 kills on .357 hitting and a team-high nine digs as UAA (7-7) prevailed in an offensive-minded contest, outhitting the Tigers .409 to .333. Junior setter
Kadyn Osborne had a career-high 21 assists and
Makana Eleneki had 15 assists to help the Seawolves to their best hitting percentage of the season and 12th-best in any match since the NCAA went to rally scoring in 2001.
Haley Fairchild had 11 kills and Emily Adams collected 10 kills on .625 hitting for OBU (3-8), but the hosts could not complete late comebacks in each set, getting outblocked 8-2.
"That was a terrific effort against a solid team," said UAA head coach
Stacie Meisner, whose club earned a 3-0 win over Union earlier Friday on the Henderson State campus. "It was encouraging to see us stay aggressive when the sets got tight. Especially with some key personnel out, we were able to utilize our depth and show that we can play well together regardless of who's on the court."
UAA grabbed the early advantage by claiming a set that saw no lead larger than three points. Trailing 21-19, the Seawolves got consecutive kills from Tuchardt and Blue to tie it, and claimed a 24-21 lead when Tuchardt finished the run with another kill. Following a kill by Fairchild, Tuchardt again found the floor on the other side to end the frame.
The final two sets would feature 22 combined ties, including at 24-24 and 25-25 in the second. A good pass from
Trinity Tatupu helped Osborne set Tuchardt for the go-ahead kill, and the Highline (Wash.) College transfer came through again on set point for a 2-0 lead.
Despite trailing 19-16 in the third, the Seawolves earned the sweep with a 9-2 closing run, getting three kills from Tuchardt (including match point) in the surge. In her 14th match as a Seawolf, Tuchardt connected for a career-best .526 attack percentage on 23 swings, along with four block assists.
Junior middle blocker
Leilani Elder ripped nine kills on .500 hitting, while Tatupu and fellow freshman
Bella Burney notched five kills apiece. Burney led UAA with a career-high six block assists.
Making the program's first-ever trip to the state, the Seawolves face two more Arkansas opponents Saturday on the Henderson State campus.
