Hot-hitting Seawolves whack 'Jacks, 3-0

ANCHORAGE (Sept. 2) – Senior outside hitter Nicole Blue had 10 kills and junior libero Reilly Plumhoff collected 14 digs Saturday to propel hot-hitting Alaska Anchorage to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 volleyball sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt in the Seawolf Invitational at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Ranked No. 14 in the NCAA Div. II preseason top 25 poll, the Seawolves (3-4) also got a career-high-tying eight kills on .538 hitting from junior middle blocker Leilani Elder as they connected for a season-best .353 attack percentage.

The Lumberjacks (2-2) were led by 10 kills from outside hitter Awelina Fakalata, but the visitors from Arcata, Calif., were held to .029 hitting and trailed for the entirety of the match.

"That was some really clean, crisp volleyball by us today," said UAA head coach Stacie Meisner. "We played well in the service game and that set us up for success in all the other offensive areas, and our defense kept some points alive with great digs."

After seeing their 16-match home win streak snapped by No. 7 St. Cloud State on Friday night, the Seawolves started Saturday's match with a 7-1 run and never looked back. UAA hit no lower than .333 in any of the three sets, while holding Humboldt under .120 in each frame.

Blue hit .320, went 15-of-15 in serve receptions, and matched her career high with four blocks assists, while Elder and Isabel Evans also had four block assists. Junior rightside hitter Larssen Anderson finished with seven kills, and Evans and Bethany Tuchardt had five apiece.

UAA also dominated the back row, outdigging the Lumberjacks 46-33, including eight apiece by Madison Galloway and Sydney Johnson.

The Seawolves conclude their own tournament tonight in the finale at 7 p.m. against Florida Tech (0-3).
