#24 Falcons fend off Seawolves in 4

ANCHORAGE (Sept. 30) – Bethany Tuchardt had 12 kills and fellow junior Reilly Plumhoff delivered a pair of career highs, but the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team could not complete a late comeback Saturday, falling 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 26-24 to No. 24 Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (10-10, 2-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got also got 31 assists and a career-high 14 digs from junior setter Kadyn Osborne as their 12-match GNAC home winning streak was halted.

The Falcons (12-2, 6-0) were powered by 13 kills from outside hitter Sarah Brachvogel and 10 total blocks – including five solos – from senior Hannah Hair, who entered the match with an NCAA Div. II-best 1.51 blocks per set this season. SPU libero Christina Lopez added 17 digs and was 13-of-13 on serve receptions as her team won its 11th in a row and beat UAA for just the third time in the past 21 meetings.

"We showed a lot of fight – both in the first-set comeback, and then when we kept clawing back in the fourth," said UAA head coach Stacie Meisner. "Their block is one of the best in the country, and it obviously caused us trouble, but we also made too many unforced errors to give ourselves a chance, especially on our serve."

Coming off a Thursday sweep of Montana State Billings, the Seawolves appeared poised to drop the opening set against the Falcons, who moved into the national rankings this week for the first time since 2011. Trailing 22-19, Meisner called a timeout that stopped SPU's momentum, leading to two straight Falcon errors. Blue tied it with a kill to continue the surge, and Osborne finished a 6-0 run with a sneak attack to claim the set.

The Falcons dominated the middle frames by holding UAA to -.122 and .095 attack percentages, and appeared ready to pull away with an 18-13 lead in the fourth. However, Tuchardt powered a 7-2 Seawolf run with a pair of kills, and delivered tying kills to make the score 22-22 and 23-23. UAA had a chance at set point when a Hair attack error made it 24-23, but Brachvogel and Maddie Pruden answered with kills, and Brachvogel served an ace on match point.

Plumhoff equaled her career high of 21 digs and dished nine assists, smashing her previous best of six. Madison Galloway and Sydney Johnson added 10 digs apiece for UAA, while Nicole Blue finished with 10 kills.

The Seawolves return to the road next week to face Saint Martin's (Thur., Oct. 5, 6 p.m. ADT) and Western Oregon (Sat., Oct. 7, 6 p.m. ADT). Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live links.
