ANCHORAGE (Jan. 25) – Senior guard
Tyson Gilbert scored 18 points for Alaska Anchorage, but Western Oregon guard Jason Gallant knocked down a game-winning three-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining Thursday to boost the visitors to a 55-53 men's basketball victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (14-5, 4-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists from senior forward
Sawyer Storms in their first home loss of the season.
The Wolves (5-11, 2-6) were led by 18 points from wing Kris Cook, 17 points and six assists from Gallant, and 10 points and 11 rebounds from forward Cameron Benzel, helping the them snap a three-game losing streak.
In a series where nine of the last 10 games were decided by 10 points or less, Thursday's matchup was no exception to the rule. The entire contest was played within a 13-point spread, with Western Oregon taking the largest lead at 22-12 with 6:25 to play in the opening half.
Benzel put the Wolves up 26-24 with a layup just before halftime, setting up a second half that featured five ties and six lead changes.
Gallant swished a three-pointer to make it 40-32 at the 13:30 mark before UAA answered with eight straight points, sparked by a fastbreak layup from
Jaron Williams and a Williams feed to
Dathan Satchell for a three-pointer.
Gilbert gave UAA a 42-41 advantage with two free throws, and freshman
Trey Evans swiped the ball from WOU's Trey Wilmot and coasted in for a layup.
The game stayed within one possession for the final 12 minutes, 39 seconds, as UAA took a 52-50 lead on a three-pointer by Storms with 1:07 left.
Gallant then answered when he was fouled on a three-pointer with 36 seconds left and made two of three free throws to tie it.
Gilbert's three-point miss set up WOU with the ball 94 feet from the basket and 7.1 seconds remaining, and Gallant dribbled all the way upcourt and heaved in an off-balance trey, setting off a celebration that resulted in a technical foul for a player coming off the Wolves' bench.
Gilbert sank one of two free throws to bring UAA closer, but a halfcourt inbounds heave was intercepted by Cook, who dribbled out the clock.
Gilbert shot 4 of 8 from long range and added three assists and six rebounds, while Williams had 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting and dished three assists.
Junior point guard
Dillon Barrientos had seven rebounds, a team-high four assists and no turnovers, and Satchell had eight points and three steals.
