ANCHORAGE (Nov. 23) – Senior outside hitter
Katie Birtcil delivered 13 kills and 13 digs in her final collegiate match Saturday, helping the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 victory over playoff hopeful Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (16-12, 10-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 kills, eight digs and two aces from junior outside hitter
Tia Allen as they finished tied for fifth place in the GNAC standings.
The Red Leafs (17-8, 13-5) were led by 11 kills from senior pin hitter Brooke Dexter, but the Canadians were outhit .368 to .111, dropping their third straight match to end the regular season. SFU entered the week at No. 7 in the West Region rankings and now must wait until Sunday night to learn its NCAA Tournament fate.
"Everything seemed to click today from the start to the finish," said UAA head coach
Stacie Meisner, who completed her second season in the program's lead role. "We executed our game plan extremely well, and never let Simon Fraser have any momentum. I'm excited for our seniors to go out on a high note, and we thank them for everything they contributed to our program."
Looking to avenge an SFU sweep last month in British Columbia, the Seawolves came out blazing with a 5-0 run behind the serve of Birtcil.
Bethany Tuchardt notched one of her eight kills for a 15-7 lead, and the Seawolves cruised to the opening-set victory.
The Red Leafs responded by earning a 13-11 lead midway through the second set, but their momentum would fade as senior
Leilani Elder picked up a block and kill during a 5-1 Seawolf run. UAA ended the set on a 16-4 surge, with freshman setter
Hannah Trotter picking up all three of her aces.
UAA never trailed in the third set, outhitting the visitors .351 to .220. Birtcil had five kills and no errors on just nine attacks in the frame, while Allen and Elder tallied three apiece.
A grad transfer from New Mexico State, Birtcil recorded her seventh double-double as a Seawolf.
The team's lone fourth-year senior, Elder had six kills on .600 hitting in her final match, while sophomore middle blocker
Bella Burney had five block assists.
Senior setter
Kadyn Osborne led UAA with 21 assists.
Despite tying for fifth with Seattle Pacific, the Seawolves would have won a theoretical tiebreaker with the Falcons thanks to their head-to-head sweep.
