Seawolves smash Hardrockers, 80-41

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 29) – Senior guard Jazzpher Evans had 16 points and five assists to lead another balanced effort for the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team Friday in an 80-41 blowout of South Dakota Mines at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (7-1) also got 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks from senior center Tori Hollingshead as they outshot the visitors from Rapid City .449 to .286 and forced 29 turnovers.

The Hardrockers (0-6) were led by eight points and four rebounds from guard Savea Mansfield.

"I thought we continued to make strides as a team tonight, especially the way we took care of the ball in the first half with only two turnovers," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team came in leading NCAA Div. II in scoring offense, scoring margin and turnover margin.

Coming off a pair of exhibition contests against NCAA Div. I opponents in last week's ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout, the Seawolves showed no drop-off in their return to NCAA Div. II competition, leading Friday's game for all but seven seconds.

Trailing 4-3, Evans made an immediate impact off the bench with four points in a 23-second span to start a 17-0 run.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference club made a surge at the end of the first quarter and got a midrange jumper from Piper Bauer to make it 22-15 just 12 seconds into the second quarter. UAA took control from there, however, holding the Hardrockers scoreless until Morning Grace Spotted Bear's layup with seven minutes left in the third quarter cut the Seawolf lead to 49-17.

The 23-2 second-quarter score matched UAA's program record for fewest points allowed to a D-II opponent in that stanza, and broke the record for second-quarter margin against a D-II foe.

Evans finished 6 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 5 at the foul stripe, while Hollingshead shot 7 of 12 to help UAA to a 47-7 edge in bench scoring.

Nine of the 10 active Seawolves scored at least five points, including nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from senior forward Jaisa Gamble. Gamble also broke her career high with six steals, matching Emilia Long for game-high honors.

The Seawolves and Hardrockers meet for a rematch Saturday at 3 p.m. AST at the Alaska Airlines Center. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
